« on: November 10, 2008, 11:47:19 AM »
Does anyone have a recommendation for a usb blue tooth device for a regular pc?

My parents want to transfer photo's of my niece and nephew to their computer, and i see that their phones are blue tooth capable.

Thanks

Generally speaking, what you are asking for is usually done via a hardwired connection if at all (BlueTooth usually doesn't provide storage access, only I/O such as headset/speaker, and to a much lesser extent - at least on cellular devices - text input).

But, because most phones provided by most of the providers (at least here in the NE) are deliberately crippled in various ways before the provider will carry them to force you to use services that the providers can charge for to perform tasks like those you are referring to, the answer is going to be phone and provider specific, and if you are looking for a "free" solution, will often will depend upon how far outside of the provider "approved" paradigm you are willing to risk going.

Since they aren't your phones, I'd talk to the provider first - they quite likely have a service that lets you send pictures from the phone for a minimal charge if they don't allow it via a direct connection.

i use blue tooth to transfer data and pictures from my phone to my computer.

you have to setup a blue tooth shared folder on your pc, (file sharing for this folder must be enabled).

your phone has to be new enough to be able to acknowledge that a blue tooth computer can be contacted. older phones (3 or 4 years) don't tend to recognize computers at all. newer ones should acknowledge the computers presence.

then you have to figure out how to input the authorization code when trying to make them talk to each other. each phone is different so this is hit and miss trial and error, enter it on the phone then the computer, if that doesn't work reverse the order.  most of these codes for the phone are 0000 providing you have never changed it, the code for the computer will depend on what blue tooth set up and company brand you are using. but the code should be listed on the setup screen.

its a pain in the butt to get setup, cause the phone doesn't tend to want to wait long enough for you to input the code from the computer or it wont acknowledge the input signal fast enough and your computer will time out the contact. then you have a multitude of settings that must be correctly enabled in the computer or it wont accept the incoming files from the phone.

its a pain in the butt, but i have 3 different phones that i can use to talk to my computer with now, so it can be done.

the likelyhood is that if your phone is internally blue tooth capable then it also has a built in internet connection. your easiest way to transfer pictures is to transfer via e-mail the pictures to your e-mail account and from there download them to your computer. this is the simplest way to get them onto your computer.

Good Luck
