What do you use your instruments for.
« on: November 26, 2008, 11:26:54 AM »
I use the speedometer to tell if I'm in the envelope or not.

I use altimeter for obvious reason.

G meter I some time reference in a fight to see if I am unloaded.

I use the flap indicator to see if I forgot to disengage them.

Fuel gauge I keep my eye on always.

I do not use artificial horizon

I do not use yaw and bank indicators.

Anyway.  The reason I'm curious is because this is the first flying game I ever have paid attention to gauges.  Kinda cool.  Adds to realism.

Mostly just to check gear or flaps status and ammo count.
I almost never look at the speedometer, G meter and other stuff.

But when flying & fighting at very high altitudes, the artificial horizon can get quite important...

I do not use yaw and bank indicators.

When possible, I try to pay attention to the yaw indicator.  Uncoordinated flight is a big energy leak, so I when I want to retain energy I try to stay coordinated.  Combat trim can cause the need for left-rudder in slow, looping maneuvers where you'd normally need a little right-rudder to stay coordinated.  I didn't notice that until I watched a lot of film and saw what my instruments were doing while I had been paying attention to the bandit.

I don't really pay to much attention to my instruments, I can feel what's going on if that makes any sense.

Ofc I will always look down when the opportunity arises to double check.

I reference my KIAS indicator very frequently, especially pre-merge and whenever I can during a dogfight.  I like to know how much E I have before cranking in a maneuver- especially before I do any vertical maneuver.  In fact, I rarely point my nose up without checking airspeed first.

I reference alt for cruise, but rarely worry about alt once in a fight unless I'm looking to regain E or disengage.

I use the speedometer and climb rate guage on climb-out to minimize my time to the combat area and arrive at the alt I want when I get there.

I use the boost and RPM guages when I need to conserve fuel.  I also use the boost guage on climb out to understand the plane's "sweet spot" in terms of performance at what altitudes (particularily usefull at less than full boost/rpm).

I use the compass mostly when I'm in bombers.  I've got the degree headings pretty well figured out for most targets I want to hit.

I use the tailhook light on CV based aircraft to make sure I hit the right key combo and the tailhook is deployed before landing.

My eye is always on the fuel guage and the ammo remaining.

Once I'm engaged I don't watch anything.  I fly entirely by feel.
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

i enjoy watching the speedometer, its always nice to know just how fast my wingless and tailless craft is moving just at the moment of terminal impact with the dirt! i seriousely think i have managed to break a few air ground speed records!

i almost never fly "inside". i fly "outside" 99% of the time, and occasionally come back "inside" to verify what i see outside.
in a fight, i never ever come inside, as that would mean taking my eyes off the enemy.

WOW... I was unaware that the Aces High Aircraft were equipped with speedometers. I am usually well informed by my AIRSPEED INDICATOR!
