I'm sure they'll greet us with K4s,152s and jugs. All three are better then the ponys up there. I never said the 51s aren't good up high. The point I was trying to make is that fighting at that alt against better aircraft takes a different skill set then is used at the normal 1k to 15k MA fights. At least that's been my experience anyway. I have no doubts the mustangs will hold their own, but to be successful against better performing aircraft we're going to have to be thinking a couple moves ahead.  :salute

Well flown P-47s can be trouble at 30k. 109K-4s aren't much of an issue. At 30k they're well above where they shine. Ta 152s are no problem either. The P-51D is dead equal in speed at 27k with the 109K-4 (440 mph) and the P-51D does it WITHOUT WEP.

Think about this... The P-51B is about 12 mph faster (441 mph) than the 109K-4 at 30k and out climbs it to boot. At high alts, 109s cannot afford to push the nose below the horizon without throttling back. Their controls get very stiff in a blink.

IMHO, the four most dangerous fighters between 25k and 30k are the P-47N (476 mph at 30k), F4U-4 (452 mph at 27.5k), Spit14 (444 mph at 27.5k) and the Spit9 (only about 406 mph at 27.5k, but it is very agile up there with great climb rate).

What pilots need to realize is that stall speeds are IAS.

Widewing,

After reading your thoughtful and informative posts
I have half a mind to make one of the P-51 groups
consist of P-51B's.

NOTE: I changed it.

My only problem with them is their reduced number
of guns.  It's an issue for me at least because my gunnery
is weak and I need to get all the wallop I can
out of my guns when (and if) I connect with my prey.
That is, before I turn into his prey!  :huh

Thank you!   :salute

Now who can I get to command the P-51B
group?  ;)

What are you going to do with the 51s? Like before, I am willing to help out provided you aren't hitting airfields or HQ.

I'm really not at all sure Del.

I planned to take a look at the map on Tuesday
and then, in conference with the various group
commanders, decide how best to deploy our forces.

I seriously hope that since I have given the Bishops
a heads-up that they will be the target, as well
as our launch date and time, that they
will organize some kind of resistance to make this
a serious brawl for control of the skies.

My initial plan going in is to support the area where
the Rooks have momentum.  That can either be
to close enemy bases in the area so as to
isolate enemy bases from support, a fighter
sweep to deny the enemy control of the skies
in the area of operations or to attack strats
with the 'stangs and then support base
capture missions.

Its all kind of up in the air until Tuesday until
we have our chat and can assess where best
to strike.

Not in the game according to http://gonzoville.com/ahcharts/index.php.

If only the P-47N didn't depend so much on WEP for its performance I would say it's the best high altitude fighter in the game, but it's certainly among the top 3.
