Lost My Wingman
« on: December 10, 2008, 09:44:36 PM »

Socrates passed today.  You may have heard some cheaping when I was speaking on vox...  Sometimes he would hang out on my shoulder while I fly AH.  It's possible that the disposable baking pan my wife was cooking with may have done him in. :(  We knew to be careful with Teflon; this appeared safe.  If you own a bird, please be more careful than we were.  We're going to miss him! :salute

Sorry to hear that man, had a bird when I was growing up(cockatiel), they are fun pets to have.

So what is it about a baking pan that killed him?

Teflon will emit toxic fumes when just sitting on a stove heating.

My understanding is that only happens over 700 deg. F. If used as designed, most teflon pans won't harm beast or fowl.

Cute little fool, sorry to here that.  :salute

Here's my homies ... Officially Pepin & Lucie, but to me Usef & Ralf (USAF & RAF). Ralf passed away when we got our German Sheperd. She gobbed it right out of the sky like a flak burst. Survived both our cats for years, to die like a sucker to a puppy dog.

I lost an African Grey a few years ago.  We think it may have been because one of our neighbors was burning some trash (tires? shingles?  other?) and the smoke was blowing right at our house.  We weren't home at the time, but had the windows and doors open.  "Zulu" didn't seem quite himself that evening, and died that night.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss.

I know they're sensitive to smoke and fumes but I've never heard of fumes comming out of regularly used cookware taking a pet out (aluminum or teflon I know are bad, but only at extreme tempuratures I thought).  Was he close to the kitchen, or is it a small apartment?  I live in a small apartment and regularly cook, I hope it's not harming my pets.
