BTW you 'I'm so realism top notch' fanatics,
How is the engine torque?
How is engine / fuel management
How is the pilot fatigue?
How is the flight distances?
How is the issue xxx in yyy?
... What?

The more ICON options for the scenario CM's / h2h host wont really hurt your MA-playeing,  eh?

If you want to realistically simulate a blind pilot, then turn off icons.

I think the game has it about right. 6k out seems to be about the range where you'd be able to start to distinguish between various plane types if you were actually flying.

Those pushing "no icons" as a realistic measure should ask themselves if they would bet money on being able to identify the a/c in the upper right hand corner and guess within plus or minus 200 yards it's range.

(Image removed from quote.)

If not, then we must reconsider any supposed "realism" of such a measure. I will post the "answer" picture later.

My guess is a P-38,or at least a twin engine model aircraft, but I do belive a 38,and about 1.5 out...

Looks to be about 1.5k or slightly more and a 109 varient of some sort....

Edit: This depends on theater tho.....PT I would say a Niki or Ki and ET would be the 109.

It is a 109 K-4 at -800, pointed more or less directly at you.

Steel was luckiest, but his distance was still way off and he couldn't say for certain whether it was the inline-engine 109 or radial-engine Ki/N1K. That means for all intents and purposes it would be impossible to tell whether or not it was a 109 or 190 also.

I think this neatly sums up the point that what no icons simulates is flying with pilots who couldn't see well enough to get a driver's license.

"Crikey, sir. I'm looking forward to today. Up diddly up, down diddly down, whoops, poop, twiddly dee - decent scrap with the fiendish Red Baron - bit of a jolly old crash landing behind enemy lines - capture, torture, escape, and then back home in time for tea and medals."

I think you can tell 190 from a 109 by the wing length but thats not the best issue. The really telling part is that it took me about five minutes to form an opinion. Thats about 4:59 to long in the real world. To be honest I even cheated a little by looking at the top for the mission orders. I figured it was likely to be a realistic match up that would have saw action in WW2. The match up for a ET setup was likely to be a 109 or 190. I do honestly think gave the wing span gave me the most logical answer tho. If I had seen the film you could have picked heading and closure rate fairly effectively too. That screen shot is more of a reasoning test with certain clues. If that had been shot in the MA I would have really guessing.
