A question for you P-47 experts
« on: December 16, 2008, 11:10:39 PM »
Iv been doing some P-47 skins for the 353rd guys. Iv finished with the D-11 and D-25 I was working of for them and now would like to do a D-40 so they have a skin for any setup. Only problem is we have only found D-28s. I'm guessing that's the last model jug they flew before switching to the pony. Thing I'm asking is do you jug guys think the D-28 could be put on a D-40? Or if any of you have a D-40 in 353rd markings. Iv started the D28 on the D-40 but want to know what you guys think before going ahead any more.

Sometimes, we just need to remember what the rules of life really are: You only
need two tools: WD-40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the
WD-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.

If im not correct isn't the 353rd a ETO squadron that was based there during WW2? If any 353rd P47 skins were done, they'd most likely be done only on the D11/D25 models since they were the primary P47 varient on the Eastern front in WW2...

I could be wrong. But the D40 was primarily used in the PTO as well as the N jug, correct? Because the squadron skins i see on the D40 are squadrons stationed in the PTO.

Looking at the 353rd Fighter Group Data Base on http://www.littlefriends.co.uk/index.php, it would appear that the Group switched to Mustangs and operated, at best, 20 or less D-28's in total.

If I were you, I'd do a D-11, D-25, P-51B, and P-51D.  Although they didn't operate many more P-51B's that P-47D-28's, 21 v 20, they did have them and the plane is there to be skinned.

Yeah I think I'll just do a B pony instead of a D-40. I was wanting to do a P-51B skin any way because some of my squaddies fly it in the mid war. This way I can kill two birds with one stone.

This is the only one from 353rd that I found a picture of, but it kinda looks like at D pony to me.

It has a bubble canopy like a Bpony but I cant tell if that is the background or the tail stabilizer in the outline.

That's a P-51B with a Malcolm Hood and a fin fillet.  I was looking through the Little Friend's data base again and I think I was a little wrong about the 353rd and P-51B/C's.  As near as I can tell from the listings there, none of the B's saw combat.  They were War Weary, used for practice or as hacks, to get around in.

The only example I'm not sure about yet is:

43-12208 P-51B 352 SX-P       Lost 28 Sept 44 - Lt. Charles I Sladek KIFA

But I would assume KIFA = Killed In Flight Accident, making it another War Weary Hack.

So, it looks like they went From P-47D-20 series aircraft straight to P-51D's for combat.

Thats a war weary P51B so it would have not been flying combat at that time.  I thought Fencer already did a 353rd B pony and it was Lucky Leaky II

He may have but its not in game right now. It might just be out of the rotaion.

Did "Lucky Leaky II" see enough combat to make it into the game?

If not, if any of you guys have a cool looking B/C pony that you would want in Ill be willing to take a shot at it.

Yes to combat for Lucky Leaky II.  It's the best documented 353rd B model as well as there were so few.

Thanks Dan. I'm guessing the SX-M and the rudder are black because most of the 353rd ponys Iv seen have black or yellow rudders.
