just built new pc HHEELLPP!!!!!!
« on: December 23, 2008, 10:55:25 PM »
I just built a new pc, threw in a Gigabyte MA790X-DS4 moboard with a AMD x4 2.2ghz, 2 GeForce 9500gt's, with 4gig of RAM, and 2 500gb hard drives.  All being run by a 900w modular power supply.  When I plug it in, the green led on the power supply lights up, and when I press the power switch, I get a momentary blink on the led's on the fan.  The cpu fan doesn't turn, nor do any of the other fans.  I get no beeps or anything.  This is like my 7th pc which I have put together and the 1st one that I have had a problem with.

Before I take it somewhere to get it looked at I wanted to see if anyone had any ideas.

I am sure it's something stupid and simple.

thanks

No fans are working? My guess is either the PS,or the motherboard.Do you have an old PS you can plug in to see if the fans start working, etc?

ok, swapped an old 500w powersupply in there to see if anything would work.  I didn't hook up the case fans since I know the power supply (old) wokred fine since I shut dow my sons and all the fans worked there so I took his power supp.  The fans that run off the m-board blinked and wiggled a little more than the other fan.  Some of those brown washers on the standoff studs the the board mounts to may have slipped..would this cause the board to ground out and not start properly?  I think I had a bud who this happened to.

Does it post? I have no idea what light means(getting power)but they make a microspeaker that connect to MB and there will be beep codes(refer to codes in manual). BTW you have this post in wrong topic. Post it in Hardware/Software. Really sounds like motherboard is bad but I am speculating. There really is no way the connectors could "slip". Most cases come with screws and nylon washers that screw into the inserts(posts). When you srcrew in tightly should be no "slippage" but you may have something I am unaware of. Make sure all power hook ups are connected seeing fans don't start and you tried an other PSU. If I remember correctly, I had same issue with my first build and MB was bad.

Inserts screw into case, you place motherboard on inserts(posts) and install screws. No "slippage" possible. I believe there are nylon washers that go under post  between post and case.

Picture of Motherboard speaker. If MB posts you will hear 1 beep. If it doesn't you will hear beep codes(Series of long and short beeps). Your bios manufacturer will have a list of codes and there are a few codes that sometimes tells if MB is bad. No beeps is a problem. You may have to bring it back or send it RMA to manufacturer.

Looks like 2 power outlets in MB. Top right is main(white) and lower left is 4 pin. Also, did you install CPU to MB? Make sure you have heatsink applied to cooler. This is flat surface ontop of CPU contacts CPU cooling fan. Read a post Intels won't fire up???? Although this is AMD.

Ahhhh, been there done that. Your power supply is not plugged in completely. Pull all you plugs out and then reinsert them. Let me guess. Is this one of those Modular power supplies? Check both ends. Good luck.

Some of those brown washers on the standoff studs the the board mounts to may have slipped..would this cause the board to ground out and not start properly?  I think I had a bud who this happened to.

that happened to a comp i built. poor alignment between the case and board mounting holes caused the board to short out on the case. the thing wouldn't fire up at all. i only picked up on it when i got tired of messing with it and decided to pull it completely apart and reassemble it from scratch.

your problem may be caused by something else but i wouldn't condemn any component, and in particular the mainboard, until i had checked everything else.

the mainboard often gets the blame, but unless you were unlucky enough to get a dud board from the get go they are fairly robust and usually don't give many problems until they get some age on them. i have a 7 year old comp with a soltek board that went tits-up after months of flaky performance because of 6 or7 leaky electrolytic caps . probably cheap caps, and although its days are numbered it works fine again after i scraped the crud of them and pushed the bulging tops down
