Top Ten of All-Time the video game edition
« on: January 04, 2009, 02:33:04 PM »
Pretty self-explanitory, what's your top ten list for video games?

*  Can be from any console, PC, online, handheld, etc
*  The games that you do choose, give a reason
*  Say whether or not you'd recommened it to someone -and- if you still play it today

Here's my top ten:

1. WWF No Mercy for the Nintendo 64.  In my opinion, hands down the greatest wrestling video game ever made.  I mean handicap ladder matches, there's nothing better.  I love the control scheme, it's simple and flawless.  A great variety of wrestlers to choose from, and the ability to creat custom wrestlers.  I would recommend this game to anyone who is a fan of pro wrestling, be it puroresu, the WWF, or TNA.  Unfortunately, I do not play this game anymore, I sold my 64 a couple years back.

2. Metal Gear Solid for the Sony Playstation.  One of the untouchables in video game history.  It routinely makes many top ten lists, best of all-time lists, so it's not out of place on my list.  I love the story, it's incredible.  The graphics at the time were top of the line, and a real eye opener of what's to come.  The improved AI (although still handicapped) was one of the better elements of the game, and became one of the staples of the franchise.  Of the four next gen MGS games, this one is ranked at #1, yes, I like this one better than MGS4.  This game created the stealth/secret ops genre, or, at least reinvented it.  I don't think I could give a higher recommendation than I give for this one, it has it all, and is extremely cheap these days.  I still play this game.

3. Resident Evil 4 for the Playstation 2.  I've played all of the RE series games, and this won takes the cake.  It revitalized a dying franchise (due to the lame movie series) and brought in many new fans.  I am in particular anxiously waiting for the release of RE5.  This game has it all as well, length, action, solid story, suspense, horror, plenty of missle launching action.  I recommend it for the fans of survival horror, or just shoot 'em up kinds.  I still play this game.

4. Fallout 3 for the Playstation 3.  In my opinion, the game of the year for 2008, and there were many steller titles released in '08.  I believe this game has reinvented the FPS, and the mixture of FPS/RPG is great.  My first play through was near 90 hours or so, so there's no worry about not getting your moneys worth.  I hate how short some games are, like Star Wars: Force Unleashed, which I beat in almost 6 hours, after spending $60 on it.  The side quests, main quest, karma system, VATS, non-playable companions, and much more is enough to keep you occupied for weeks on end.  I certainly recommend this game, and definitely still play it today.

5. Final Fantasy VII for the Sony Playstation.  I've played most of the FF titles, and this one is at the top of the list.  Like MGS, this game routinely makes the all-time/top lists from many magazines/websites.  I am in total agreeance with them, this game will blow your socks off, even if your shoes are still laced up.  The game spans four discs, which means a lot of gameplay, the CGI cutscenes are still impressive today, and the game is challenging to even the expert FF player.  I've always thought that Cloud was the coolest main character in the FF series, add in a supporting cast of Barret, and Red (I forget the exact number, thinking it's 13) and you have a great game.  Septorith (sp?) is the coolest arch nememsis you could ever have as well.  I highly recommend this game to fans of the series, or just RPG buffs.

6. Super Metroid for the Super Nintendo.  This was the first game I had for the Super Nintendo, and it's my favorite, it's also the greatest Metroid title to ever hit the shelves.  The story is good, combat is great, and exploring the massive levels trying to find weapon upgrades is top notch.  I recommend this game to people who like shooting aliens with hi-tech guns, and playing as a bad bellybutton chick.  I don't have a Super NES anymore, so no more playing for me.

7. Streets of Rage 2 for the Sega Genesis.  My best friend and I used to play this game religiously together, usually until our thumbs had blissters on them.  It's a very one dimensional game, you beat bad guys up with the character of your choice until you get to the end boss.  It's very simple, but oh so sweet.  I usually picked Max or Axel, they were the best fighters and the strongest.  Recommended to people who enjoy fighting games and arcade like games.  I don't have my Sega anymore, but I play the emulator quite often.

8. Winback for the Nintendo 64.  I used to have my teammates from my football team over to play this game, long nights of shooting each other in the back at close range with a shotgun is goodtimes.  The story is pretty lame, but the multiplayer is what sells the game.  I recommend this game to people who like multiplayer shooters.  I can't play this anymore, no N64.

9. The Legend of Zelda for the Super Nintendo.  Was my favorite RPG until I played FF VII.  The Zelda series has taken some weird twists and turns, but the one thing that stays the same, and that one thing is that this game is an all-time classic, and should be in everyones collection.  Recommended to people who like Zelda, RPG's, and adventure games.  I don't play it anymore, but it's on my bookshelf.

10. Grand Theft Auto IV for the Playstation 3.  I thought San Andreas was the top of the line for the GTA series, but I was definitely wrong when this game got released.  Niko Bellic is by far the best GTA main character they've ever introduced, a hard edged European who doesn't mind cutting someones finger off.  The playability is ungodly high, the game length will take months to complete, and there's nothing better than running civilians over while fleeing from the cops.

So, that's my list.  By the way, this list itsn't in any particular order.
forecast for tonight is alcohol, low standards and poor decisions

For the Nintendo, you forgot Star Fox man! That game was it! The only game I ever saw with the "double sized box"

Me and my brother used to beat it everyway possible for hours...
No one knows what the future may bring.

In no particular order:

Half-Life 2 - Without doubt one of the greatest games ever made, and one of the standards by which contemporary FPS' are judged. Awesome physics modeling, incredibly realistic environments and characters, especially the engine's ability to synch with the voice actors (apparently, no animation required, the engine handles it all on itself). Can't wait for Episode 3.

Doom - Wolf 3D may have been the game that put the FPS on the map, but Doom was MINDBLOWING for the time.

X-wing - Best game in the series by far. Along with TIE Fighter it had the best immersion of any other game in the series. XvT and XWA were incredible let downs. Considering the direction LucasArts and LFL took at the time, it's hardly surprising.

Warcraft 2 - Oh come on, do I NEED to say anything about this? The only shame is now no one remembers Warcraft started as a strategy series and EVERYTHING is WoW-related. Even the upcoming movie is ignoring the roots of the series and cashing in on the MMO.

The Legend of Zelda (original) - Held the #1 spot of the best all-time NES games in Nintendo Power from its release until they stopped tracking NES titles. Along with Mario, when people thought "Nintendo" Zelda was the first thing that came to mind

Quest for Glory I-IV - One of Sierra's best. I still curse Vivendi for the way the @#$%ed up the series with V

Aces of the Pacific - Best WWII air-combat sim EVER

Secret of Mana - One of the best games on the SNES, and one of the best console RPGs ever

Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II - Back from when LucasArts actually still made GOOD Star Wars games. Great story, great game mechanics.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - Great RPG. Beautiful graphics, and incredible flexibility.

Serious question --- Does that game actually have an "ending?"

If we are talking arcade games, there was one called Xybots that was my favorite.  My younger brother and I would each get $5 worth of quarters and see how many levels we could get before the money ran out.

Pigskin was another very fun game.  Basically it was Mideval rugby where scrums ended up getting someone killed . . .

In that same vein, different era, was Cyberball.

BattleZone was another good one if you didn't get a machine that sent nothing but missles.

Defender was one of my older brother's favorites (hated mutants).

Just who is this smelly13 character?  Top ten video games and NOT ONE cartoon airplane game?  And where is Gran Tourismo?

I have to admit I'm speechless.

Technically yes, but after "winning" you continue to play around in the world after that.

1.  Harpoon...the original, got me stuck on computer games

2.  Command HQ...an older game that was one of the first modem player vs. player release.  Great game.

3.  Aces High...I was an addict for many years, just started flying again.

4.  Air Warrior...the one that got me into flying.

5.  Red Storm Rising...another oldie but goodie

6.  Call of Duty 4...just a great FPS

7.  Silent Hunter 3...best Sub game I've played

8.  Baldur's Gate...A friend of mine and I almost finished that game on characters that were all level 1.  We never realised that when it siad "Level Up" that we had to actually do it, it wasn't automatic.  The stategies we had to employ to win some battles were amazing.

9.  Attack Sub 688..got me into sub games

10.  Sid Meyers Pirates...just a fantastic game with so much potential.

If I was to make a top eleven list, Half-Life 2 would make the cut.  The free man.

Well, that was what I was wondering, whether it would ever tell you, basically, that there was nothing left to do, it is time to start a different character.  Seems it doesn't.

1.   Doom 1 & 2 - Nothing touches the Doom Series.

2.  America's Army.  Version 1.4 - 1.9  After they started going too deep into SF it became extremely boring and all about twitch players and who can strafe the best.  Nobody plays the maps that are actually a challenge anymore.

3.  Medieval: Total War.   Glorious fun all-around.  Amazing action with the Napoleonic mod.  Viking invasion was great until 8 Berserkers slaughtered 500 of my saxons whilst attacking uphill through a hail of arrows :(

4.  Rome: Total War.  Not so grand but with the SPQR Total Conversion mod.  Makes a very challenging and long lasting game.  (Still running the same campaign from almost a year ago.)

5.  Sins of a Solar Empire.  This is how Space Junk is Born!  I love this game.  I'm currently off conquering a galaxy with over 100 planets to play with.  I can name my Capital ships, I can designate fleets and compositions, I can choose defenses and watch with a bowl of popcorn and cinematic mode turned on as 3rd fleet and my Flagship the Imperator and its two sister ships Agamemnon and Mephisto warps into and lays waste to an entire system.  Or watching the nimble dance of the Lexington's  fighters and bombers as they tear apart a dreadnaught.

6.  Aces High 2.   I have yet to find a combat flight simulator with better controls/feel and anywhere near as perfect a view system.

7.  EvE: Online.  Good fun running around and ruining other people's days.

8.  Call of Duty 4.  The best of the Call of Duty series.  World at War was a big disapointment for me, same-old story-line and crappy immersion. Made me want to kill all of my team-mates almost as much as MOH:PA.  CoD 4 was amazing.  The first FPS that actually modelled bullet penetration to a satisfying degree.  (No more hiding behind plywood when I've got an M-60.)

9.  Diablo 2.  Whirling Barbarians, armies of skeletons, chicks freezing people to death, and a woman throwing a javelin that turns into a thousand bolts of lightning.

10.  WoW.  Nothing shall stand before my 80 Retribution Paladin! Nothing!  Err okay maybe that shadow priest and the arcane mage over there... and that Druid will be an interesting fight... but that's it!
I've always loved the Warcraft series, and once you get past the morons who play WoW and find a good group of guys/girls to play with its just like running around in Aces High... only... I'm a Paladin smiting the horde instead of a knit running from rooks or dodging bish ho's.  The brightest side I find to WoW is finding squeakers... and ruining their days...  because little kids should not be need rolling on my Deeps gear for their off-spec.
