Been bugging me all day...
« on: January 08, 2009, 06:36:16 PM »
I saw the movie "Pearl Harbor" last night (uggh... I know)

And I noticed on the spitfires that the dude flew had only 2 20mms on them (or maybe 2 .50s)

Did spitfires ever have only 2 20mms on them?
No one knows what the future may bring.

also...the Spitfire it shows Rafe flying is in 303 markings (a Polish squad) and has a four bladed prop (which didn't show up until 1942 and the scene is in 1941)

We've already established that aircraft can change the number of blades on their prop in-flight.  Robert Conrad did it all the time; in fact he'd frequently land a totally different aircraft than he used to take off.  That's skill.

I feel bad for the Editors of WWII History magazine. There was a "whats wrong with this scene" question they published several months back about a scene from that movie, and there were at least 3 correct answers for that one question. Must have been an interesting month of letters.

If you are looking at that movie for any kind of historical accuraccy, you are gonna be hurting big time.

That being said, there were Spits that carried only 2 20mms.  The first cannon Spit used in combat was a Spitfire Ib with 2 20mms.  It was not popular due to gun jams but was tested in the B of B by 19 squadron among others.  There were numerous instances where Spit drivers took the 303s out to save weight too and only went with the 2 20mms.

But throw that movie out for any kind of history please :)

Well if you want to be depressed, this movie actually made money.

Quote
Although the movie cost approximately U.S. $132 million to film and promote, it grossed a relatively modest US$200 million at the domestic box office, but it soon earned a respectable $450 million worldwide. Despite many believing it was a disappointment, the film was actually one of the highest-earning pictures of 2001. Pearl Harbor was released on DVD on 4 December 2001, three days before the actual 60th anniversary of the attack.

Not XIVs, but definitely not the Mk Is and IIs that would have been appropriate.

Though, can you imagine the effect if the Germans had sent Bf109E-4s, Bf110C-4s, Ju87Bs, He111H-6s, Ju88A-5s and Do17Zs at Britain and met Spitfire Mk XIVs defending it?

The Germans would of won anyway; only n00bs fly Spits.  :rofl

Sorry, I had to say it and was meant completely in jest. I didn't intend to have that reflect the real spit flyers during WWII.  :salute

That flea ridden potato-abortion of a movie should have died a miserable death- something involving festering sores and what not.

My family thinks I'm crazy, but I can't help it.  Every time this heretical  bigtoe movie comes up, I get so diddlyin' pissed it's unbelievable.

If you wanna make a movie that takes place during ww2, fine.  If you wanna make that movie about love in a time of war, fine.  If you wanna throw Jerry Springer antics in ther just for giggles, fine.

But DO NOT come to me and tell me you're making this arse licking snikerdoo movie out of "respect to the vets", then hold press conferences capitalizing on "the few".

Michael Bay is on my toejam list bigtime.  I wouldn't hesitate to break that apple suckers nose if I saw him across the street.
