Who else did the Japanese fight
« on: January 26, 2009, 02:55:20 PM »
I think they fought the aussies and the brits. If any of you WWII historians find a battle of mostly Aussies or Brits we should do that as an FSO. Of course that would depend if we get any Aussie planes. It's like a joke I once heard once. If I had some ham I'd have ham and eggs. If I had some eggs.

Chinese - more than anyone.  American, Aussie, Brit, Kiwi, French, Russian, Canadian, Indian (quasi-Brit), and Dutch troops.  Philippine and Indonesian (quasi-dutch) as well, but I'm not sure how much air combat was involved in either of those cases.

Thats off the top of my head, anyway.  You name it, they fought em :) I'm sure we could get some cool FSO's out of the lesser known Japanese engagements.

Main problem with doing an early China vs. Japan setup is a SERIOUS lack of aircraft. We don't have ANY Japanese fighters appropriate for the period (Japan did NOT use the Zero in China until sometime after the AVG was absorbed by the USAAF. We need the A5M, Ki-27, and Ki-43 for later, during the AVG-period. Additionally the G3M would be the most representative bomber of the time, although the G4M appeared then as well). Allied aircraft aren't much better off. There were a lot of lend-lease aircraft, so the P-40B would work, MAYBE the Hurricane Mk.I, (someone can probably correct me on that) but we'd also need aircraft like the P-36 Hawk, even the Boeing P-26 and some biplane fighters.

Kiwi's (RNZAF) fought heavily in this scenario IIRC. They flew P-40s and Hawgs (Corsairs). A guy that lived next door to my grandad flew corsairs there, but is to far gone (senile) to get any sense out of.

In the first few months of the war, Japan brushed aside small Dutch units in Indonesia flying a variety of planes that included Fokkers and Dorniers, likewise some RAF Buffaloes and Hurricanes on their way to Singapore.

Darwin, in northwestern Australia, was attacked both by carrier-based planes and land-based planes from Timor, starting in February 1942.  The early defenders were RAAF Kittyhawks (and Wirraways!), later, Spitfires and USAAC P-38s.

And of course, Port Moresby on the south coast of New Guinea was often the target of Japanese attacks. Defenders flew pretty much the entire range of Allied planes. We'd really need the Beaufighter to do that justice. >nudge, nudge, wink, wink<

All of these we don't have the planes to do. ESPECIALLY on the Japanese side.

Thailand was also attacked on December 8th when it hesitated to allow Japanese forces to pass through the southern part of the country to attack the British in Malaya and Burma. Thai armed forces put up stiff resistance at the Prachuab Khirikhan air base for several hours before their government reluctantly agreed to become a Japanese ally. The Royal Thai Air Force lost several planes before the fighting was stopped, including three Curtiss Hawk III fighter planes at Prachuab Khirikhan.

The Japanese also bombed and successfully invaded Guam and Hong Kong in December, 1941. There were apparently no American combat aircraft stationed on Guam to resist them. The British at Hong Kong had just two Supermarine Walrus seaplanes and three Vickers Vildebeest biplane torpedo bombers. Only two Vildebeests survived the initial Japanese bombing and then the British destroyed them to keep them from being captured.

Problem is none of those scenarios are doable with the plane set we have. Not without a TON of substitutions.

I think the early PTO may have the WORST plane set in the lineup. Say what you will about the Russian Front, at least Lend/Lease automatically offers plenty of legitimate substitutions.

Thanks guys! Really learned some things here. I never knew there was the am5 for one. However if we should get the plane set I think it would be a blast.  :salute
