Your reputations are spreading!
« on: January 28, 2009, 05:12:03 PM »
This is a great community, and I can't tell you the number of times you've helped me out with tech stuff. In fact, this was the board that convinced me that I *could* build a machine and helped me choose the components. I've given credit where credit is due....and now my son has been asking me to ASK YOU folks about a problem he's having.

He's recently been recovering from a heat induced computer meltdown that cost him a motherboard AND processor. (Thats ONE way to learn to keep your vent ports clear!) All the replacements are running OK, but every so often he's developing an odd video glitch. He'll be playing a video processing intensive game (Like Lord of the Rings Online, which has a TON of textures to draw) when he'll start to see red dots drawn across the screen in a straight line. Several lines may develop, and sometimes he thinks there almost might be a crosshatch pattern.

Once the dots appear, they will remain until he reboots. If he leaves the game, the dots well persist on the screen no matter what he does, right down to the regular desktop. They do not move, but remain static until reboot. Once rebooted, everything seems completely back to normal. He's run dxdiag and the diagnostics without any problems being detected.

He's thinking this may be happening due to bad video memory. Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

Post his system specs, or better yet post hid dxdiag (go to Run: type in dxdiag -> click on Save All Information -> It may take a bit, but you'll be asked to save a Text file -> copy the contents of that text file into this forum thread, will be very long, may have to break it into multiple posts).

P.S. Next time, a better thread title may attract more responses, I passed over this thread a couple times until now.

Give him a break, Fulmar, his brain is frozen from the weather we have been having.

I agree, post the DX, but I would have to think it's a problem with the video card, it may have cooked too.

Go through the graphics settings for that game and see if you can find a process for tweening or interpolation and turn it off (might be some other operation that is taxing the GPU).
If you like the Sick Puppy Custom Sound Pack the please consider contributing for future updates by sending a months dues to Hitech Creations for account "Chalenge." Every little bit helps.

+1 or if its a powered video card check the amps on the rail the video card uses and see if there is enough amps for the card to run when its taxed

My thoughts as well, anytime I here about a "heat related" problem I have concerns about the real cause being a spiking PS. Often that is the underlying cause for the original problem.

"(Like Lord of the Rings Online, which has a TON of textures to draw) when he'll start to see red dots drawn across the screen in a straight line. Several lines may develop, and sometimes he thinks there almost might be a crosshatch pattern."

I had that similar problem on a laptop and in quite a short notice it developed into a situation where the display worked only in 640x480 mode and the motherboard was replaced due to fried GPU.

My advice would be to remove the graphics card and carefully to clean the cooler from dust as I suggest that is the reason for obvious overheating problems. Also ensure that the case has adequate venting for the cooler air to enter. If the problem persists you could try to run the comp with the case open and see if that helps (and thus also verifies the problem to be heat related).

Good choice for a game BTW...  ;)

Hi Sim,

I had a similiar thing happen to my old machine in my g/f's posession after swapping out the psu and motherboard it had the same weird graphic anomalies that just wouldn't go away whatever I tried.

New gfx card fixed it,  Something was fubared on the card itself.  In her case it wasn't only inside of a game but on boot and desktop.

If you have a spare graphics card to test it with give that a go.

Flatscreen monitor?  Are the dots always in the same place?  Pixels going on the monitor?  Inquiring minds want to know.  Hehe

Flatscreen, yes -- dots in same place, no. Also they disappear as soon as you reboot.

The vid card fan is clear. Is there any specific way to be sure the problem is the card itself? Hate to buy that too and find problem was something else.

As requested, here's the DXDIAG == split due to character per post limits.
