Field Artillery & Towed
« on: February 01, 2009, 06:33:20 PM »
Still Would like this, there have been many threads,  I just wanted this thread to be spelt rite.

Eitherway, if there is anyway to have mobile 5" type of guns in play. Love the idea, and think it would take a base capture to a new level,  especially, if there was a way to choose loadouts prior to launch in hanger. say 60/40 AA/HE/AP/? or other available loadouts.

Thank You
Floatsup
Forgot who said this while trying to take a base, but the quote goes like this. "I cant help you with ack, Im not in attack mode" This is with only 2 ack up in the town while troops were there, waiting. The rest of the town was down.

Just so you know: a 5" gun is 127mm, there were no guns of this caliber deployed as SPAs in WWII.  Now if you want to wish for 18lbers, 25lbers, 75mm, 105mm, 150mm, but not 155mm, as SPAs or the huge morter on the Sturmtiger, then go ahead. (I know, i know, i neglected some odd/obscure calibers in there)

Not to be picky, but he said 5" type guns, referring to a type of gun already modeled in the game.

Further pickiness, I think the Russians would take great offense to their 122mm and 152mm guns being referred to as either "odd" or "obscure."

Finally, why not 155mm?  You have something against the M12?

The 155mm is not a stretch, the US used a 203mm and 240mm M1 artillery piece during WW2. Personally, I think its overkill, as you could shell a target from well outside dar range. Imagine chucking a 165lb shell 25,000 yards...I think a 105mm is more than sufficient for gameplay, either as a towed unit, or in a SPG chassis.

Regardless, the concept of towed artillery in the game adds a hole new element. Yes, they're lethal at leveling a town or base, but they're equally vulnerable to air or GV attacks unless protected by AA units and tanks. Targeting and ranging would have to be improved, as simply lobbing shells onto a town without the ability to direct fire is pretty much a waste of time considering the ammo that could be carried.

Directed artillery fire during WW2 could be very precise, so perhaps having a Jeep based spotter with some sort of targeting ability could be an option...make effective artillery a team task, and you've got something.

Personally, I'd like to see those useless 37mm AA guns replaced with the standard 40mm Bofors gun. The rate of fire is identical to the naval AA guns, but the ballistics and accuracy are considerably better. I only go to field AA when the hangars are down. I'll take my chances against fighters in an IL-2 before I go to the 37mm.

I have no preference for the particular type of high-angle hell, but I would love to see Forward Observer/Artillery Battery teamwork added to the game.  I would love it even more if we could have an artillery mode for the clipboard, which automatically zooms you into the nine nearest grid sectors, divides each of them by ten, and places a milliradian dial around the perimeter of the clipboard.

Put a Jeep or M8 out there to call for fire, and both teams would have everything they need to properly drop rounds on the target, assuming they knew how to add/drop/fire for effect, et cetera.

I agree - I think the offensive capability is balanced quite well by the fact that artillery is a relatively soft target, and getting a Jeep or M8 into a ranging/spotting position without being detected or killed is not an easy task either. Eventually, it'll be targeted much like the hiding C47 is now during a base-take. Kill the spotter, kill the ability for accurate gunfire.

Add to that the logistical aspects of having to resupply an artillery battery, chances are unless its a 75mm battery, that less than 24 rounds would be carried by a towing M3, even less for a 105mm.

It would certainly add to the overall gameplay.
