The dueling arena is the place where people in the MA who prefer sportsmanship are told, quite forcefully, to go...  There is absolutely no need for a landing-kills message in there.  It's just salt in the wounds for some people, and encourages the same horrid gameplay that the landing-kills message  encourages in the MA.

I agree with you to an extent. I can understand people getting mad if they are outside of lake furball. Lake furball is the "furball" area so anyone getting mad by the type of flying should probably move to one of the more 1v1 or 2v2 style of airfield setups. There are plenty of them. IMHO.

Removing the "so and so has landed # kills in a # of the #" serves no real purpose. I know when I started playing about 2 1/2 years ago i thought it was an achievement if I could up at Lake Furball and get home with over 5 kills. it was an accomplishment that I was able to keep my SA up and make it home in the chaos.

Does anyone understand my take on this subject?

It's wrong because the players simply don't care about "an achievement if I could up at Lake Furball and get home with over 5 kills.".  They fly the same way someone would paint a crappy painting and make their signature really big.  Or just not paint anything and just paint their signature.  It's completely meaningless.  It's a reward for no effort.
Now, your turn.  What is lost by removing the kill messages, and leaving only what some people argue is what the game's all about - the fighting?

You know, part of me thinks I'd be doing you a favor setting you straight, but the other part just doesn't see the need to be a complete jerk.  I guess I'll just say the meaning of accomplishment has changed much over the years, and I believe it has changed at the expense of the good of the community, game, and player learning.

What is gained from removing kill messages? Shame from not being able to get home in the furball? If you don't care, ignore the messages. I personally feel good when people say "Good job!" when I land.

Removing all perk planes? The same thing will happen to the Spit16, as it did the Tempest when the 262s were removed.

The 3rd person view? Yeah, it is a bit cheap, but then again, the DA is a more fast-paced arcade-style arena.

Set me straight about what? It's OK that I do not completely agree with everyone. I'm just stating there are still people here who use the messages as a means of judging our performance in the DA. That doesn't mean that if I am consistently scoring  5+ kills in the DA that I'm going to move the MA and get the same. It's a different style of flying and fighting but for me it's an accomplishment as it has only been in the last few weeks that I have been able to return to base at all in the DA.

Try to look at it this way, you have some really good sticks in the DA and then you have the mediocre sticks like myself and then you have the ones that well.. probably should take up another hobby. I see the good sticks landing tons of kills and that's because they use good SA and make sound decisions. I strive to fly like them and there are several that do the same as me. so it is an accomplishment when we go on a run and score 5 kills and manage to return home to be shown the one message that we have been waiting for since we started flying in the DA.

If HTC removes the message from the text buffer I'm not going to be soar about it, I'm not going to piss and moan that it's been removed. I'm gonna keep flying and fighting. I think one thing that can be done is for sticks to support each other while they are in the air. If Pilot A shoots down pilot B, pilot B should at least salute pilot A. I guess I'm just a dying breed in the DA. I do care about achievements, flying with honor and using strong tactics and teamwork to deny the enemy but like I said before I'm not going to be mad if they remove it nor will it affect my game play.

That question was answered already.  "We" don't care about the messages, I ignore em easily. "They" on the other hand care for nothing else.  Whether you care for the "good jobs" or not is irrelevant to whether fights at the lake are quality or not.

Removing perk planes won't work either.
Third person view is a lot more arguable but not related either.

And in every neighborhood there's that one 12 year old brags about beating the local 6 year olds at the soccer field.  It doesn't mean all the high schoolers should massage the 12 year old's ego and tread lightly so as not to hurt his self esteem.

Every single time I'm in there I keep hearing people talk about how they're so great, and getting all these "WTG's!" from everyone else, yet every time I ask if anyone wants to duel, it's the same few quiet types who take me up on the offer.  And why should I be suprised?  There's no "glory" or "fame" to be had dueling quietly on a private field...  But since when was that the point?

I'll tell you what... Let's keep the kill messages and just rename it the "Gilded Arena," it would be much more suitable on so many levels.

I never use 3rd person. I can't do it in the MA so why use it in the DA? unless you only fly in the DA.

Are those people amnesiac or something?  There's stats kept, look those up for progress keeping as accurate as you might like.

Irrelevant to whether the DA lake's gameplay is in the crapper thanks in part to victory messages being too many player's only interest, at whatever cost to gameplay quality.

The only mediocre sticks in the DA are those that don't put the fighting above everything else.

It sounds like you have the right intentions and no reason to argue against something that will remove little and add a lot to gameplay quality.

Moot- you are correct mate. I was reading to deeply in to this whole thread..

I fly to have fun and win on an occasion. I can just as easily monitor my progress through the stats page as well as my recorded sorties as I record them all.

I think for myself at least the message was kind of a reward after the hard fought sortie. It doesn't mean that I am a score potato or that I place the message above flying it's just one of the methods that I have come accustomed to when a hard fought sortie is finished. if and when they remove it I replace the message with something else, it's not a big deal.

Ciaphas, the point is, the "kills message standard" has led you to think that these guys are good sticks.  By and large they aren't.  In fact, they're amongst the absolute worst in this game.  Taking off at furball arena, climbing up to ensure you're always higher, taking the fastest plane with the best guns possible, attacking preoccupied enemies, and running whenever one's on your six, WILL MAKE YOU A TERRIBLE PILOT.

Yet for whatever reason, the landed-kills becomes the standard.  People like you think such players are "good."  You're probably as eager as anyone, and have asked them how to do it.  So eventually, you learn from them how to do it.  Now you can do the same things they do.  Now you can climb higher, take a faster plane with the best guns, attack preoccupied enemies, and "egress" when the situation gets "bad."  But now you're also a terrible pilot because you have mistakenly associated a certain style with "skill."

A few months later a new guy shows up and starts emulating you.  The cycle continues.  Soon enough, there are arenas full of people just like the first pilot you thought was "good."  It snowballs.  The gameplay gets worse and worse.

It sounds like you're the sort of person who could do good things in this game, and earn some real accomplishments.  But if you want to do that, you have to stop emulating the names in lights before it is too late.

Actually that is the fly in the ointment on this wish.  As it is now, if you disable "name in lights" in the arena setup, it also disables "you shot down ----"/"---- shot you down"

If that's the trade-off, then I'm for it. You can always ask over channel 1 or 200 who you were fighting.... While it's not perfect, having no kill messages and no landing messages will be better than having both. At least in my opinion.

Would swapping the "you killed ##" with something like you shot down "Model aircraft" work better?
