Strat Shipping Convoys
« on: March 06, 2009, 03:56:08 AM »
Perhaps a large convoy with a couple of cruisers to resupply HQ/City, and small groups of smaller vessels (coasters) supplying factories or ports and coastal bases.

Why? Disrupting supplies was a major part of WWII. The massively armed CV groups we have at the moment are so well defended they are almost impossible to attack with small numbers of torp bombers or attack aircraft. Would be nice to have some smaller targets that are suitable for small squad sized attacks, which was the bulk of the work of eg. Coastal Command.

Just seems a shame that we have some of the classic torp bombers in AH but they dont get much usage in the MA, apart from suicide runs against CV groups (which IRL required scores of aircraft.)

Plus it would be a great role for the Beau when its introduced ;)

Agree, more coastal shipping, more single ships headed to port to make up a convoy. More lightly armed Liberty ships to sink. More inland waterway barges and ships, and dare I say it, pleasure craft?

to further flush this idea out:

1.  Instead of increasing the number of "milkrun" targets have different varieties instead of all factories/cities
2.  I would include changing the nature of trains to something truly strat that would require scouting and locating them to kill
3.  Have "ammo" convoys or "fuel" convoys on the maps with lots of islands instead of ammo dumps/radar dumps etc.

if it isn't too much to ask for would be some very cool changes...open  up some other options for gameplay :salute

Not to mention targets for Mossies and Beaus.
... missions were to be met by the commitment of alerted swarms of fighters, composed of Me 109's and Fw 190's, that were strategically based to protect industrial installations. The inferior capabilities of these fighters against the Mosquitoes made this a hopeless and uneconomical effort. 1.JD KTB

*Make it so there's a fleet oiler/tender that is assigned to go from the port of origin to the task group, much like the barges do, to repair the   CV and other ships.
*If any other ships are sunk, they have to sail from the port to the group, but only after a time delay for it to be built, pbly 15 mins like most hangars. One problem with that is I'm not sure how manned guns would work.
* Add 2 LSTs, or their equivalent, into each task group for the LVTs to spawn from. As the group gets close to the shore, the LSTs move in, with a destroyer or 2 for support, to where they can embark LVTs. If they are sunk you have to wait for them to rejoin the group. That will end the port stalemate when the assigned CV is there.
Of course some more TG commander controls might need to be added, giving the option of sending 1 or 2 LSTs in at a time.

Or I've gone way overboard with the idea, in which case let the flaming begin.  :noid
