Reboot DVD failure?
« on: March 16, 2009, 01:21:52 PM »
Just had a DVD RW drive go south.

It would read sometimes and sometimes not.

Replaced it with a backup I had setting around and problem solved.

My question...

After replacing the slow dieing DVD RW drive the machine boots much faster.  (guess it was slowed by the DVD drive hunting/reading?)

On some occasions if I tried to read a dvd the system would hang and then reboot.

This was a nearly brand new DVD RW drive failed in less then 6 months IIRC.

anyone else have/experience these type of problems.
It's been said we have three brains, one cobbled on top of the next. The stem is first, the reptilian brain; then the mammalian cerebellum; finally the over developed cerebral cortex.  They don't work together in awfully good harmony - hence ax murders, mobs, and socialism.

My Plextor finally kind of kicked the bucket about 3 months ago.  It was just about 5 years old.  My burn speeds has been really slowed.  Nothing beyond a 1X when burning a DVD.  Occassionally (once every couple months, within the last year of its life), my PC would hang at the post screen.  Since the new drive I never had a problem with boots.  So I attributed it to the failing drive.

Overall the drive served me well and was pleased.  IIRC it cost me $180 back in the day.

Now I have an Asus SATA drive.  This is actually my 2nd drive, the first being DOA from Newegg.

I guess they don't build them like they used to huh?  The two CR ROM drives (1 drive, 1 burner) in my old Dell (1997) and the one in my Sony laptop (2000) are still working fine.
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

I do recall scavenging back in the day for a CD Drive.  A 2X drive IIRC.  This was when I first got into building about 10 years ago.  I tested to see if it still worked.  Anyways, it was bad, once the power molex was plugged into the drive, the system wouldn't even post.
