This is the down side of one side being primarily (or entirely) defense. Granted, I've also been CiC where the purely offensive side could completely overwhelm the defenders with masses of B-17 and B-24 formations....

Given the situation when Italy surrenders, i am sure LW had went on defensive mode.

Well, the absolute numbers might be even, but the Axis fielded 50% more fighters than the Allies.  The latter had a large chunk of their force in bombers.  Historically I'm sure the Allied fighters would have outnumbered the Axis fighter defense.  We could recreate this; it would only require that the victory conditions be changed to place more emphasis on bomber losses, and less on the Axis having to prevent target damage.

Having a clear majority of my objectives be defensive definitely made it much easier for planning and coordinating.

To the guys not seeing much action I apologize.  Seemed to be a night of feast or famine.  The east and south east sectors saw more than their share.  I didn't want to pull much away from the west because I was still expecting an attack there.  When it really didn't materialize in force by T+60  I tried to vector the squads that hadn't seen action to a fight but it became progressively difficult as the fight began to ebb.

Glad to see some had a fun night <S>

[Takes off CM hat]

No, in this case, it had more to do with the Allied plan and Allied execution of that plan.  Allied plan called for groups of bombers to attack two targets sequentially.  This allowed 8 targets worth of German defenders to focus on four attacks.  Second, since some of the attacking units chose to attack one target, rearm, then return for the second target meant that the disparity in aircraft was even more pronounced, as defenders from some objectives were vectored in to fights at other targets, and were still able to get back to defend their primary target.

Had the Allied attacks all been near-simultaneously on 8 different objectives, the German defensive aircraft could not have concentrated like they did, without giving the Allies much easier access to some of the targets.  There are a couple of other techniques that would work well in this setup as well.

[Puts CM hat back on]

I'm not saying planning wasn't part of it.
