Vid card fried? or Can I do something about it? 9800 pro 128

Well this could be it for the card but I'm not sure since this is what I'm seeing.

Something is off for sure.



The desktop has pink vertical lines and I can still see everything fine.

I'm not sure what I can do or what the problem is. It was working fine last night but this morning when I turned puter on this is what has happened.

I'm going to try and reload the drivers next. Maybe even unplug and plug it back in.

Any suggestions?

Is the fan running on the card? My sons quit when he had a 9800 years ago    He took the cover off and used a floor fan to keep it cool enough until he got a new card.

That looks just like many cards that I've seen video memory failure, and unless you have a reflow station and some special tools it need's to replace the exsiting memory (NOT COST EFFECTIVE) then try first to  clean completely and special care to the edge connector and reboot if it's still there, save yourself some wishfiull thinking and toss it in the bin. go get a gts 250 and overclock it, from frys for about $90. ten times the card at half the price.

It looks like VRAM but could be heat.  Are you sure you've got enough clean power to push the card?  If not that might have fried it.  What's the warranty on the card?

Well I took it out, dusted it off the best I could and cleaned off the contacts. Once i stuck it back in it worked for about 35-40 min then started to get the lines back. I kept playing anyway and managed to kill a temp with a 202 in the DA then all of a sudden the lines went away and i was back to mormal for about 5-7 min. From that point the lines on the screen stayed.

Stuck a fan near it to try and coll it off further but no help.

It's been running on this machine for over a year with the same power supply. Not a whole lot has changed since.

I did get a Shockwave error just before posting this mesg.

Only clues i got so far.

I've seen two cases of these now. After awhile the problem will not go away and the card is totally broken and any amout of cooling will not take those anomalies away. It also seems that once the lines appear it is more or less too late to increase cooling etc. as there is already damage done, or at least the card is more prone to fail under hot conditions after that stage even with better cooling. I have understood that it is usually related to the card just running too hot for too long time.

I'm not at all sure that it is very good practice to put the GPU and memories under the same heatsink anyway as the heat production of the GPU may cause the memories to run hotter than they normally would. In some water cooler packages only the GPU is cooled and the memories are provided with separate small heatsinks which attach with thermal tape and this is more sensible solution IMO.

This is no big mystery. There's an intermittent video ram failure somewhere on the card that's based on, but not directly linked to, heat.

Just get a new AGP video card for $100 or less and be done with it. Don't spend too much on this now-antiquated technology; $450 or so will get you a new system that plays AH better than anything that might still be using an ATI 9800 AGP video card.

Save yourself some trouble and just replace your video card with an ATI HD3850 AGP card.  Probably can find those around the $100 or less mark.

Sapphire and Powercolor both make AGP versions of the HD3850.

My only complaint with the AGP version of the 3850 is that I have to wait for the hotfix drivers each time ATI releases a new driver revision.  For some reason, ATI is utterly incapable of adding the fix for the AGP card with each new driver revision and instead releases them as a hotfix driver about a week after the release of the new driver revision.
