Sound wont work...
« on: April 27, 2009, 12:52:49 PM »
Hello.

My name is Zach, I played for about a year steady back in 2005/2006. I've come back and started playing again, really missed the game and most of the community.  I downloaded the game about a week ago, started playing... and noticed that my sounds don't work correctly. All I can hear at all are the engine sounds, plus maybe one or two odd and end sounds, like one or two but not all of the hit sounds, I have no weapon sounds, so stress sounds as far as I can tell, and no bomb release or impact sounds.  I downloaded a sound pack, hoping that would fix it (Mitsu's), and the sounds I could already here had changed, but nothing changed as far as what I could hear and couldn't hear.

I've tried adjusting the sound levels in the Options menu, turned the volume level on all the sounds up to 100 while turning the sounds I can already here down to 50 or so. Nothing changes.  I'm about to reinstall the game, and hope that fixes it... any other advice if this doesn't work??

Thank you all in advance!

~Zach

Zach, not a pro here but did you check your sound files to make sure that you have them?  You should be able to hear all the sounds in the files.  Hopefully somebody else reads this and can help you out.

Might be a problem with your sound card/ drivers?

Just checked drivers... they're up-to-date.

So you can hear the sound?  Try this, go to options on the clipboard.  Open preferences.  Then open game sounds.  See where your levels are set.  If you still don't hear anything, then check the silly stuff i.e speaker plugs, volume...etc. etc.

If you are in a manned gun on a field or carrier.  You wont hear any sounds unless you fire, there is an inbound enemy (air raid siren), the enemy is close (I think it's around 2 or 3k out), or if friendlies are around with engines running.

If I'm in a gun emplacement, I hear nothing, at all. Nothing. The gun fires silently, planes flying over are silent, guns being fired at me are silent... bomb explosions, silent...

If I get in a plane, I can hear the engine running, loud and clear. No volume level changes, just, for some reason, I can hear my own engine.  I've tried turning down the engine sound level in Preferences, turning my volume up all the way. Their's nothing there. I can hear, however, a select few hit sounds when I'm being shot at, but not all of them. This is extremely aggravating...

I'm at a loss here Zach.  I suggest you put this question over to the guys in Technical support in the Help section.  You might get a better response over there.  You could also try and PM Skuzzy.  He might not get to you right away, but he will eventually.  Good luck.

Make sure you are not forcing EAX or Dolby on for your sound card.  Make sure you have the correct speaker configuration in Windows.

Lastly, if you have more than one active sound card in the computer, things can get funky with sounds.  Check DXDIAG to see if there is more than one "Sound" tab.

When all else fails, send me the DXDIAG output with a description of the problem.

As far as I can tell, I have it setup through Windows as "Stereo Desktop Speakers", and I actually had to install a second sound card yesterday so I could use the joystick I got, but the problem described was present before I ever installed the card. (My computer was absent of a 'Game Port' before hand, is why I had to install the second from a old computer I had.)

<--==FIXED==-->

I unplugged my speakers from the integrated sound card (though it worked when I played the game years ago?) and plugged them up to the card I installed out of my old Win98 machine, and everything works.  No idea how this is... But I really appreciate all the help and responce I've gotten!

It will happen again, as long as you have two active sound cards in your computer, the chance of Windows getting confused over which one to use will always be present.
