Partition and format Hard drive, reinstall OS, drivers, software.

Very very tough once its fully loaded in to get it all.

Threatfire (google it) will help keep you from getting infected again.

You do not have to go to "bad" sites to get a virus these days.  Any ole Windows based server can deliver many of the viruses available today.  Many of the delivery sites have no idea they are infecting computers.

As long as you have "ActiveX" enabled in your "Internet Options" you are at risk, whether it is email or WEB or any other service (iTunes, facebook, myspace, acrobat, twitter....).

Good luck in getting it cleaned up.  My Wife's computer gets infected at least once a week.  I typically just wipe her system out and re-install the OS once to twice a month.  Easier than trying to fight the viruses and the mess they leave behind.

Without the OS installation CD, you are pretty much going to be screwed in the long run.

Try running "housecall" while in safe mode with network.  It'll usually remove enough of the virus for AVG to be able to run and clean up the rest.  Try running AVG in safe mode too, but only after turning off System Restore and deleting all of the restore points.

Download Avast, It will clean in Dos mode before anything is loaded. My neighbor had 1700 infections and it took them off. Stay away from porn sites should that be the case or any free music.

I'd recommend looking at the windows 7 thread, it runs better then Vista IMO and is free till March 2010 or beyond.

Sounds like a worthy solution.

Don't many commercial computers that don't ship with OS CDs have a hidden partition or something on the hard drive for reinstalling the OS?  I know Dells used to have a hidden program called zztop that would reinitialize the hard drive.  In other words, don't give up yet- look at the info that came with the computer for reinitialization procedures.  Worth a try.

If he can get drivers for all his hardware for Windows 7, it would be better than running a virus plagued system.

I'm amazed so far, I've loaded it on two legacy systems (circa 2002-2004) and it not only autoloaded drivers for everything it runs better then either vista or XP on a "lowend" system (AMD athlons with 1G of ram). On a whim I loaded it on my laptop (Toshiba R15 sat) {I've always hated the thing since its so bogged down with add on crap} and it not only loaded everything driver wise but it runs every business ap (you can run anything that runs on any version of windows in a compatability mode). Basically it's windows meets linux IMO....I've got it on this box as a 4th OS and it runs AH/trackIR better then Vista and almost as well as XP IMO.

I'd check into what 715 posted above, about your pre-installed OS having a back-up partition on the HD.........

also, as Skuzzy posted, Windows 7 being just released for public beta.......some hardware, software may have driver issues...alot of people been having some luck using "their vista drivers" in these instances........also you can do a search ( google ) for Drivers or modded drivers for your particular Hardware/software  to work with Windows 7.........

I know I went and searched/collected alot of my needed drivers before I even thought of installing  Windows 7 RC 64 bit.....

those PC geeks are pretty quick when figuring out workable solutions for  new OS / Driver issues....... just check & read the Windows 7 forums ( several of them out there on the web )

Also, if you get one of them nasty Virus'  , that is loaded into your memory......it really doesn't matter what you do to try and get rid of it..........BUT- Trojan Remover (whatever the new version is # wise ) is pretty awesome in swiping one of these nasty viruses

Good Luck

edited: agree with humble ......most of my stuff picked right up...I have not installed Aces High yet, though.....but prob will since you say it is working for you.....( will Aces high work on a 64 bit OS? )

Just be careful with this option. Once March 2010 rolls around, Windows 7RC will "expire", and currently has not been announced as upgradable, meaning that when it "expires" you won't be able to use it (last I heard was an automatic shutdown every 2 hours), and the only way to fix that problem is to format the hard drive anyway.

This is false information. Windows 7 RC will be upgradeable normally _untill_ it expires. It means that if you continue to use it without buying the legal license after the expiration date, then you'll be forced to reinstall completely. Even then you wont need to format anything else except the partition where your OS is located at (we all keep a separated partition for the OS just for this purpose, right?)
