P-38
« on: May 09, 2009, 02:47:55 PM »
Does anyone have some profiles of a 38 I could try to skin?  I'm looking for a Robin Olds plane, perhaps Scat whichevernumberyoufind.

Any help is appreciated.

Old's bird has come up a bunch.  Search this forum as I know a couple of us have posted photos of it and profiles.

Maj. Robin Olds' Scat II

Problem is Scat II was a NMF bird and carried full D-Day stripes.  It was lost before they went to rudder colors in the 479th too.  Those profiles are not correct based on the photos of the real Scat II

Will do Dan. I had began Old's plane some time ago but lost it to a reformat.

So Scat II was bare metal, had a black circle on the rudders, not red coloring, and some OD on the nose?

Yeah, found that picture in a previous post that AKAK linked to, it didn't work at first but I tinkered with the address and got it to come up fine.

So far my two sources are what you posted and this:

IMO the problem with most of those planes is that they're all the same. Sure they may have different noseart, but outside of 100 yards you'll not be able to see that. The colors, tail bands, D-Day stripes, etc, have all been done.

I think that aside from 2 P-38 skins, all of the rest are either bland bare-metal or olive-drab. VERY little variety on these birds. (Pity, that... Much more choice on P51s P47s, etc)

LOL we've had this discussion before.  For those who fly em, they know the differences.  And it does make a difference for those of us with a history approach to the game.  Now go get back in your LW bird :)

IMO the problem is people coming into a thread critiquing your choice of plane when you are looking from something relatively simple to start and learn with.  Not to mention the fact it makes sense to skin a plane you will enjoy flying, keep in mind that Olds's death was in June...June is coming up.

Made sense to me.

Guppy, he needs a smack too!

Sure you can learn on a simple skin, but you ask me? Bare metal is one of the HARDEST looks to pull off, ever. Might want to start on something painted, OD, or camo, or something.

Also, IMO, the first skin is always by far the hardest. You're learning so much. It helps if you *really* get a skin you love. Something you have a personal vested interest in finishing (so that when you get down, or feel you won't ever finish, you have that driving force to keep you on task).

I started this skin previously around the time of DGS but lost it in a reformat.  This being my first skin the second time through should go a tad smoother.

Lyric has some great info on some OD 370th FG 38s; they tended to be really colorful with interesting nose art, if you decide against natural metal.

I forget now who was working on "My Dad".     I'll try to help if you get stuck, in the meantime I'd re-read the skin tutorials (great tips in those and I usually forget a lot between skinning projects) and inspect Fester's 38J skins very closely.   Dunno how he achieved such awesome detail but they are the standard I go by.

GL and keep us posted!

My Dad?  That sounds oddly familiar, maybe I am confusing this with that...I know I started on some sort of P-38 skin.  I'm crazy.

edit:  LOL.  I guess I thought I was doing an olds skin because I had so seriously considered it at the time.  My Dad was my project, it turns out, heck I even had James Morris as my avatar.  Man I'm messed up :lol

I suppose this helps me even more, giving me a good profile.
