5" Training
« on: May 27, 2009, 10:17:08 PM »
I wish the TA had a special area to teach the 5" guns.

My idea would have a ship with formations of drone bombers flying to intercept, approaching at various altitudes.  One could get into the 5" there, and have that 'cursor' there to show where you need to fire to hit.

Try as I may, I just can't seem to hit level bombers against a CV when they get above 6k.  Sure dive bombers are easy, but put them level at 6k plus, I can't seem to hit them.

Problem is in the main arenas, when you fire the 5" guns, you can't tell when the 'puffs' of smoke are from your guns or the game generated puffy ack.

Would really be helpful to alot of people. I find gunning the 5" gun very easy. Maybe it's just me though, but I was downing enemy cons out at 6.0K (fighters and bombers), and I downed 2 buff formations outside of icon range. Landed 19 kills  :D

For that matter, how about 8" CV training area with two CV's making preset maneuvers.  I think the idea maneuver would be something like head-on followed by both going to their respective right (or left) then zigzagging away from each other, followed by moving in the same direction before re-merging and repeating the pattern.   That should cover just about every maneuver.

If we could adjust the altitude of the circle drones, it would help this situation greatly.

I probably do not recall correctly whether the Auto Ack fires when the con is above 6k, but I have gotten plenty of kills from just firing where the Auto Ack fires.

5" inch kills are some of the easiest the game has to offer.

Yes, when the plane is close, or coming directly at the CV I agree.  Even when the plane is close enough for the auto ack to fire, you can aim in the same direction.

Level bombers from 8k and higher I just can't seem to hit, maybe it's just me but others seem to indicate the same thing.

Perhaps it's easy for a select few, but most level bombers I see at alt over CVs with manned 5" guns leave untouched (and the CV heads to the bottom).  It is not easy at all.

And it doesn't help that the auto 5" flak cannot hit a thing... ever.  However, I don't really think that is seriously impacts manned gun attempts: the auto ack seems to detonate no matter where it aims, but manned flak seems to only detonate in proximity to the target.  So if the auto ack isn't firing, you still can't see where you are aiming until you get quite close to the target.  Then the regular repetition of the flak burst (assuming you are holding down the trigger) tells you those near misses are yours, not the auto flak, and you can adjust accordingly.

I have sort of the opposite problem- I'll be tracking them with puffy bursts the whole way from beyond icon range in and not even so much as smoke one before they drop on my CV. I'd GLADLY go into a training setup for that one.
