...and if the NHL upholds their instigator penalty, Malkin will be sitting out game 3.
The end of that game was maddening. People not around hockey won't understand why all of that happened. If the Pens are behind in game three, it could get vicious. The league was adamant that this kind of stuff wasn't going to be acceptable. I hate the Wings, but now I just want them to throttle the Pens.
Pens are totally frustrated. No doubt trying to shove Osgood into his own net with a stick says it all. Maybe Sid the Kid-iot knows now not to touch the conference trophy.
UPDATE: Campbell rescinded the Malkin suspension at around midnight eastern. Honestly, I don't understand why, but, whatever. Campbell's interpretation of the instigator rule is not the sole reason the rule was put into the book. Malkin received the penalty on the ice, as instigator... he chased down a Zetterberg, ostensibly for an incident earlier in the game, and started punching. This is a clear cut instigator call, and the referee made it. Game 3 is going to be wild, players will realize the league is letting them go at it now.
Also, Malkin's jersey was not tied down, which is an automatic game misconduct. It can't be enforced after this game, but I bet the Red Wings have a referee check it twice a period from now on.
Rule 47.22 states: "A player who is deemed to be the instigator of an altercation in the final five minutes or at any time in overtime shall be suspended for one game, pending a review of the incident. The director of hockey operations will review every such incident and may rescind the suspension based on a number of criteria. The criteria for the review shall include, but not be limited to, the score, previous incidents, etc..."
Following that review, Campbell said: "None of the criteria in this rule applied in this situation. Suspensions are applied under this rule when a team attempts to send a message in the last five minutes by having a player instigate a fight. A suspension could also be applied when a player seeks retribution for a prior incident. Neither was the case here and therefore the one game suspension is rescinded."
