I hate vista...

My parents are in town and my old man brought along his newly acquired Asus F5SL notebook. The plan was I was going to tweak a few things and give him a wireless ADSL unit to take back home.

Sooo I get around to the wireless bit and decide to hook up to my network at home - I run a Sonicpoint A/B/G (enterprise strength AP) using WPA2-EAP. Perks of the trade.

So I go into vista with much disgust, and try to connect him. Nothing works. After fluffing around it appears the wireless is turned off by software. There is some software "Wireless Console 2" that is supposed to let you turn it on, but it won't - no matter how hard you try.

So I read up and find "Wireless Console 2" can cause issues, uninstall it, and low and behold the FN-F2 key to turn wireless starts working. However, the wireless turns on momentarily (LED on the chassis) then turns off. (also indicated by OSD when pressing FN-F2).

So I update drivers, uninstall, reinstall, turn off UAC, sacrifice a goat, nothing works.

God I hate vista.

I havent really had a problem with vista.

My only problem with vista was that for some reason my CD key was being read as expired by my computer.  After being on a phone call with Microsoft for 2 hours free of charge they ended up giving me a new CD key and problem solved.  Only problem I had with Vista, wasnt that bad other than that I ended up having to reinstall Windows with the new CD key.

As you well know Vulcan, Vista's network stack is a mess anyways and MS really hosed up the wireless stuff.  SP2 for Vista is supposed to help address the problems with the wireless connections, but I have not had a chance to test it yet.

just went with a refurbished HP
quad AMD and ATI graphics (512 mb)
and for some reason.....8 gigs of ddr2 ram.......lol  thats what it came with.
loaded with vista.

I followed the advice of Skuzzy and Waffle on the setup and so far....so good !
Keyboard has all these lame hot keys on the left side that i kept hitting and would toss me out of the game
so i glued those stiff <-------wont happen again.

My rigg is for AH only !!! I do nothing else on it.

The rest of my computer life plays out on a MAC laptop and i swear if i could play on the MAC i would trash the PC
in a heart beat.....

Windows 7 beats Vista hands down and you can use it for free for a year. I'd give that a shot if you're looking for an OS.

Yet the OS wouldn't be much use to me if I don't have a computer to support it. The ones in this house are too old for Vista or Win 7.

Dunno W7 is as easy to use as XP when using regular functions. Only when doing tech support it becomes difficult with all the hidden functions.

He meant that his rigs are too obsolete to run the newer OS generations efficiently...not that the family members are too old.
