« on: June 20, 2009, 12:16:06 PM »

The Distinguished Flying Cross has been awarded to Herder. The full citation reads:

FOR

AN EXEMPLARY DISPLAY OF FLYING ABILITY. DESPITE ORDERS FROM THE ALLIED CIC THAT LEFT THE SQUADRON
CRITICALLY SHORT ON FUEL, HERDER ENGAGED THE ENEMY OVER SARDINIA AND, AFTER THE SQUADRON'S HOME
CARRIER WAS SUNK BY ENEMY ACTION, PUSHED HIS AIRCRAFT WELL BEYOND ITS MAXIMUM RANGE TO SAFELY
RECOVER ABOARD AN ALTERNATE CARRIER IN A SUPERB DISPLAY OF AIRMANSHIP AND ENDURANCE.

Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

VMF-251 would also like to recognize Viper65 who made the same flight. Although Viper crashed on approach to the carrier group, he managed to remain with his wingman Herder for the duration of their flight, despite the loss of half a wing.
