Jagdpanzer(Hetzer)
« on: June 21, 2009, 11:19:40 PM »
           one of my personal favorites

Jagdpanzer (JgPz), German: "Hunting tank", is a name for German tank destroyers.

It typically refers to anti-tank variants of existing tank chassis with a well-armoured casemate fixed superstructure, mounting an anti-tank gun with limited traverse in the front. The Jagdpanzer designs followed on from the more lightly armoured Panzerjäger designs which took an anti-tank gun and mounted it on top of a tank chassis with supplementary armour fitted around the gun crew. Also a lot of experience was gained from the Sturmgeschütz series Assault guns, although they were associated to the Artillery they were very often used in the anti-tank role.

While the less complex design meant savings in resources and construction time could be made, this was not the prime motivation for its use. The Jagdpanzer actually had a specific role in the German doctrine and was not a cheaper substitute for tanks.

On the battlefield, the Germans sometimes had to retreat, or try to feign one. Their line of retreat would then preferably pass the location of their anti-tank units who would use their superior firepower to stop the enemy, perhaps even make possible a counter-attack. Therefore the ideal and only valid combat situation for Jagdpanzer units was in the planned ambush, and the skill of the commander of such units lay in correctly choosing and preparing such places long before needed.

In 1945 the Panzerjäger term was applied to all the Jagdpanzers and the earlier Panzerjägers were reclassified as self-propelled guns.

Hetzer is one of my favorites too. Maybe even a JGPzrIV or V. or a open top like a Nashorn. Or a M24. In addition I would like to see more attention paid to the damage model on the tanks. To many richochets from tank rounds, yet a 20 or 30mm aircraft round has no problems penatrating. Flaks (PkwIV) takes way too many hits to kill.

I like the hetzer, low, small, quick.. But, this was a pz38t chassis, did they up engine it?  Hmmm, must have!!!   Late war only vehicle tho!

I think the stugIII would be more likely in the game!
They made LOTS of them!!!

:huh

20 and 30 mm aircraft guns might track a tank, but certainly do not kill them.

Uhm... no.

You can get the credit for the kill in the MA quite often... but that's not the same as actually killing them.

Well some kind of TD would be welcome. I myself favor the super-fast, lightly armored Yank TDs since the German TDs seem to be just like another tank. If you do want to go that route then dont forget the Soviet SU-100 TD with the fabulous 100mm D-10 gun.http://www.battlefield.ru/content/view/289/123/lang,en/

I agree with this... If I find myself in a tank it is most often in a M8, doing the work a TD would be performing. It is really enjoyable getting right up behind a Firefly and taking it out point blank range.  :devil

M10 or m18 or other open topped TDs would be interesting.

Love to see the Jagdpanzer or an M-18 in the game.
