Crap...SoB
« on: June 30, 2009, 05:13:15 PM »
Downloaded a Trojan by mistake and Vista is hammering me with warning messages and crap.

Anyone have a good AV program so i can clear this out? Immediate would help, thanks.

I use Avast, so far it has been pretty great.

Thanks Capt.  :salute

Edit: Already installed AVG and it's running.

Avast better than AVG at spotting trojans?

Avast and AVG are free, thats about their only positive.  They won't hold a candle to say NOD32 in performance on scanning, catching, and preventing viruses.

ditto. Have a good read here  http://www.av-comparatives.org/ , take particular notice of performance in the Retrospective/Proactive Test, also note the false positives and scanning speeds. They also have a speed impact test on the pc file system worth taking a look at ;)

I've been using avast for years and it's caught everything out there.
It's actually a professional business class software that has a home edition.  They figure if they find the virus on private machines they can have a cure and support the paying customers by morning.  It's a win win.
After loading erase your internet cache and files in the internet section of control panel.  Then do a boot time scan.

Given it's high false positive ratings it's caught more than everything LOL.

Threatfire, shuts it down before it can do any damage.

I've found that the following four utilities have crushed any form of malicious software on my system. The downside is that one of them will only remove the files if you pay up.

NOD32
Spyware Doctor
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
AVG Anti-Rootkit Free

Just make sure you don't run two scanners at the same time.

Thanks Denholm,

I think I'm causing more harm then good for my rig. Now she won't run .exe files expect a selected few and NOD32 seems to not to be picking anything up on the scanner.

I'm going to try those program Denholm. Even CCleaner isn't running. I'll run it and then it'll crash.

Try running the free browser based Nod32 scanner: http://www.eset.com/onlinescan

Ripley, It's running now but I have a bigger problem...

My control panel is gone as well as my system restore point. Anything else i could do on my end that doesn't involve me reformatting the HD and reinstalling the OS?

Try using VundoFix. This sounds oh-so-similar to Virtumonde/Vundo.

http://vundofix.atribune.org/

Please note, if this is Virtumonde and it has settled into your computer, the chances of getting rid of it without reformatting are very VERY low.

That's fine. I barely have anything on the HD since it's fairly new so I can afford to reformatt. Everything i put on here i can easily replace.

Thanks Denholm.  :salute

Edit: Scan done, don't have Virtumonde. Also, Everything is fine now. Running but still getting the occasional pop up from my AV & spyware about that one file.
