BM-13 "Katuysha"
« on: July 06, 2009, 07:57:49 PM »

Design
The M-132 started development in 1938.1 The first designs had the rockets mounted so that they fired over the sides, but these weren't satisfactory.1 The ZiS-5 truck was the first chassis used.1

The first self propelled artillery weapon produced in quantity by the Soviet Union was the BM-13 rocket launcher.1

Lend-Lease
Under Lend-Lease the Soviet Union received over 100,000 2.5 ton 6x6 Studebaker trucks and almost 10,000 of these were converted to Katyushas.1 The Studebakers had better cross country capabilities than any of the other chassis available to the Soviet Union.1

The cab had anti-blast armor over the windscreen.1

Prototype
Prototypes were first tested in August 1939.1

Production
•BM-13-16:
◦Production started in 19401
Variants
•BM-13-16: Mounted 132 mm rockets.1
•??: Mounted M-30 300 mm rockets.1 Entered service in 1944.1
Usage
Initially only units under the control of the NKVD (secret police) were issued Katyushas.1

First Action
Katyushas were used for the first time in July 1941 at Orsha.1

Post World War II
Some variants of the Katyusha weapons system remained in service with the Soviet Military until 1980s.1

I always though these were very neat, and would like to see them in the game...

Well, how accurate are the rockets on a PT or the 251?  It would be something new and new is often good.

It would be pretty cool to have rockets flying out of the woods into towns from 3 miles away.

Give the GVers some good artillery that's not floating.

Perhaps the aiming of the Katuysha could be done similar to the 'Land Mode' of the naval guns.
Just click somewhere on the map, and fire at will.
Ofcourse with a certain 'inaccuracy'.

I would.  If I knew how to range the 251, I'd carry some supplies and have some fun in it while listening to all the whines.

You can do it but it takes quite a bit of time.
1) Range it from somewhere and note precise location you're shooting from.
2) Range same target, precisely as possible, from at least 2 other spots.
3) Go offline into CM eye mode, top view mode.  Take a screenshot from above, where you see target and as many of the spots as you can.
4) Take screenshot and draw a line from spots to target.  That's the range radius.  Mark the locations exactly opposite from the firing spots.  Draw a circle from all these spots/marks.  It should be apparent where there's errors; the more ranging spots the better the odds of seeing where the true range circle lies.
5) Obviously, you need to do all the ranging over flat ground.

The biggest time sink is the limited ammo to range with.

And of course, you need to note the target heading from any given firing spot where the target's not visible.
