I'm thinking of getting a new printer
« on: July 18, 2009, 08:12:19 PM »
All in one printer to be exact. Mosty for a scanner, don't need a fax like I thought earlier. Any Suggestions? Oh, it has to be affordable, okay cheap!

I don't know anything about all in ones because I have two seperate printers, a scanner and a fax/copying machine but my newest printer is an HP network printer that can be connected to my router either by wire or wirelessly or can also be connected to a computer via USB.  I've got it wired to my router and it's really nice to be able to access it from any computer especially since I don't always have all of them turned on.

HP does seem to be leading the industry in inkjet multifunction systems...but I really, really hate paying for ink. I wish they had affordable multifunction laser systems. But, then where would all their profits be? I suppose toner would just get more expensive.

Also noteworthy is the sheer bloatiness of the code for the "home an small business" style software packages. *shudder*

We gave up and went to an HP all in one machine, but personally, I'd not recomend it.

Full of crap that runs in the background, constantly finding itself, asking to realign the cartridges, crap like that.

If you need a printer, get a decent printer. If you want a scanner, buy it separate.

I believe Ghosth was saying in a different way. The hardware is solid, the software is utter crap. :)

Seems to be the case with most printers. My x86 software for my printer is a nightmare yet for the same printer the x64 software is fairly clean and works nicely. Seems once you move into an OS thats mostly for buisness' and such the software for it becomes less bloated which is a dream come true for those of us who hates those 20 useless programs that come with the actual driver.

Oh, my printer is an HP Deskjet F4240.

My OfficeJet 4215 has a "professional" driver pack, but it seems to disable the use of the scanner and print-to-fax system since they use the bloaty software to interface with the user.

I have two HP all in ones. On mine I turned all the "crap" off. If I want to scan or anything other then simply print Isimply go to the approperiate software and start it manually.
On my wifes machine Everything is loaded and set to go so she doesnt have to do all that.

But our needs are very different.

As someone else said. the real downside is the price of ink. Geejuss! Add $20 to the price of two ink cartridges and you can buy a new printer.
Oh and I discovered the hard way not to get the aftermarket inks or get them refilled.
Either they wont work. Or they will piss out ink all over the inside of your printer.

Newegg has some refurbs and returned printers that have been recertified on sale now. I was provided an All in on for my home office by my company. It has everything loaded and is the HP Officejet 7210. It works fine but occasionally I have to re-run the software (not the driver installation) before I try to print, scan, copy or fax anything. Other than that once a month it works good.

Do you need color?  If not, I'd highly recommend using a laser printer.  Since my days in college I've used a Samsung and currently a Brother printer.

However, since you want a scanner, you're going to have a tough time find a laser/scanner combo that's reasonably priced.  You could buy a separate scanner, though.

Through all the term papers and etc I've written over the years in college I saved a lot of money.  The Samsung I had for about 3-4 years, replaced the toner once ($50) before it stopped feeding paper without manually forcing the paper into the rollers (along with other glitches).  Cost me about $150 in 2002.  The Brother one I currently have I got on sale a little over 2 years ago IIRC.  $80 shipped from newegg.  Faster than that Samsung and has network availability which is that main reason why I chose it.  I have it plugged into my network so my wife can print to it without my computer on (which use to be a hassle with my old Samsung).  Brother currently makes one very similar to mine that is a wireless version, also sub $100.  22 ppm.

I may just get a scanner.

My current printer, Cannon, still works well. One feature I love about it is the ink is cheap and the color cartridges are separate. So if one color cartridge runs out I just replace that color and not all 3.

I have a HP all in one and a Kodak all in one. The HP is a solid printer as is the Kodak, I havenet had problems with either one of them. The reason that I bought the Kodak is the fact that they advertise that you don't get hammered on ink. The ink for the HP is ridiculously priced, where the Kodak is actually cheap to replace in cartridges.

Check it out, Its scans, copies, faxes and prints well. whenever I have to replace cartridges in the HP I always want to pitch it and get another Kodak.

Thanks Edgar!

If you ever look at the Financial statements of HP you will find they make about 1/3 of their revenue in ink sales. Not hardware as many would suspect.

I have tried a couple of all in ones and HP has been the best for me. One thing to keep in mind when looking is price of the ink they can vary alot. Also if you want to use it to print pictures they [HP] have a couple models that have 6 ink cartridges instead of 4. I have the J5780 HP for 2 years know and not one problem with it. I payed 200 US dollars for it. I dont think you can still get this  model, but they probally have something in that range if you are looking to spend that much.

I have a HP J4680 which I use for college.

Its an all in one with wireless and it goes for roughly $80-100.  Very nice printer and for the most part all HP printers are.
