Can anyone verify from concrete sources that the Tiffy was capable of carry armour-piercing and semi-armour-piercing rockets along with the high explosive warheads we have in AH?

Also, I've read that the Typhoon was capable of carrying 16 rockets - not sure if this would be termed a 'field mod' though. Any evidence it was used operationally, and widespread?

The only time I've heard of non-HE rockets was for training purposes.  The Beaufighter (which used the same 60lb head Rocket as the Typhoon) would practice with the rocket without the warhead fixed on.  I was talking to a Beaufighter expert who knew a former pilot and he was telling me a story about how the RAF bought an old US battleship for practising on.  Four planes went up to fire rockets at it, unfortunately the first Beaufighter sunk the ship with the first salvo of warhead-less rockets.  They simly went straight through the hull!  Also, whilst flying low over the sea, the rockets had a tendency of bouncing off the sea and becoming airbourne - one Beaufighter returned with a rocket stuck up it's tail!

Sorry I can't confirm whether Typhoon's used armour piercing, but thought you might find this interesting.

British rocket heads
60lb: HE
25lb: AP, SAP and practice

I'd say the Typhoon would have used all of them for sure. The Beaufighter did for anti-shipping work, even carrying mixed loads.

When the RAF introduced the 3 inch rockets (in Tunisia IIRC) they were originally fitted with the AP warheads in the anti-tank role. However, when a Hurricane squadron was sent out to stop a group of Tiger tanks they found the new weapons just bounced off the armour. Later on, someone had the idea of trying the HE heads instead and these were much more successful. Although the HE couldn't penetrate the panzers' armour, they were able to blow off wheels and tracks, or even turrets on some occasions. Also, there was a useful anti-personnel bonus in using the HE heads.

The 16 rocket load was actually 8 doubled up rockets. Two rockets were strapped together and hung off a single rail and then fired as one.

Ironically, the RAF's anti-shipping aircraft switched from the HE to AP heads. They found that by aiming them a little short of their target, the rockets would turn horizontal on hitting the water and then penetrate the ship or sub's hull beneath the waterline.

These heads just screwed on the standard rocket bodies, so there is no reason the Tiffie couldn't have carried them. I've never heard of them having done so though.
