30mm Convergance
« on: July 31, 2009, 09:59:09 AM »
With the 109K4 i was thinking about putting my convergance for the 30mm at 650 so it wouldnt slope down as much and make it easier to shoot.

if you do that, keep in mind, you'll have to aim lower (put the a/c higher on your sight) for the shorter range shots that you take.  It'll arc the round so that at 650 yards, it's crossing the very center of your site.

Don't take any of this as gospel, but.....  it helped me.

I use the Revi16d gun sight.

I pull up and start aiming where the arrow is (in the attached modified pic).  Sometimes lower, depending on how many G's you are pulling.  I have convergence set at d400 for the 30mm (even though it's a single cannon, it will affect the ballistics and where the tater drops) .  I'll set mg's at d500, especially if I am flying with squaddies so I can spook a con off someone.

Obviously it is best to pull as little lead as possible, but the one being pursued usually panics when they hear that 108 barking.  I have found that it is best to wait til you have a sure shot and squeeze off a few at a time.  If nothing else flying with only 65 cannon rounds will teach you to husband your ammo    devil

Also the 30mm rounds usually had 41 m (135 ft) of drop in the first 1,000 m (3,300 ft) of range.   WHOA!

So.... in a perfect world in perfectly level flight, using a perfect angle of drop (not accounting for wind, or arc of drop as it would not fly at a perfect downward angle, or other adverse effects on ballistics) it would go like this.

d200 = 8' - 2" of drop

d300 = 12' - 3" of drop

d400 = 16' - 4" of drop

d600 = 24' - 6" of drop

the angle of descent is (2) degrees or roughly 4' of drop for every 100' of distance (again a perfect angle, not a true ballistics arc)

Taking into account that a B-24 Liberator is about 18' tall, you have to just about point the center of the pipper OVER the buffs to actually HIT them with taters at d400  WHOA!

Also, and observation from a squaddie...........

But you forgot that when setting your convergence it also sets it vertically, so if you set the MK 108 to 300 yards it will hit in the center of your gunsight.

Hope it helps..........

I use 200, and I'm convinced by the argument that anything more is counter-intuitive and will screw with your gunnery (agent360).  Think about it.  If you have your 30mm set out to 400 yards or more, you actually have to aim below your target when you get into the normal firing range of the spud gun.

Hence all the trig...     :D

All I can say is that I have no problem hitting objects with the tater.
Now if guys would stop loading up airplanes with .50's after I've turned them into a canoe.........     :furious

No kidding.  30mm is an assist-maker if anyone has previously touched the target with bb's.

Wow, that's an interesting post, thx VM.

Now I just have to figure out how the American 37mm compares to the German 30mm and I may actually be able to hit something with the pumpkin chucker in the 39D.

Although on some level I think I secretly know that improving my aim is a lost cause. :)

I use 200 in K4.
Never shoot fighterplanes over d200 anyway(mostly d30-150), buffs from d300. Works fine :)

I can't explain it.   My aim was teh suxor until I started using the tater equipped planes...... :confused:

I shoot from d200 - d600 (with 600 being the extreme and very rare occasions)

I reserve the d600 shots for the flat and level run-home-to-momma wannabe pony pilots.  It takes them quite off-guard when I relieve them of a wing/tail, etc.  :devil   It takes me off-guard when I hit at that distance, too   :D

 :lol

occasionally I'll land a odd angled crossing snap shot or something and I'm pretty sure I'm more surprised than the other guy.  Just started putting some serious time into the 39D and so far I lucky to get one kill before I exhaust the 30 round magazine on that 37mm.

I have messed with flying the 39 a little bit and gave it up not because of my inability to hit anything with it but because of the rate of fire.  I was using it just like I use the tater, a quick burst as I anticipate my shot opportunity, but what was happening was that I was hitting with the 50s and the big gun was missing on either side of the target.  The ROF was so slow that even when I tried to adjust I was always shooting just behind or just ahead or even just ahead and just behind the target.  I always make sure to shoot close, 200 or less, so it's not that I was really missing with my aim but more with my timing.  It's relly pretty neat killing with that big gun, but it just was a bit too slow for me.  I could probably adjust to it but I'd start having to spend a lot more time in the plane.  Maybe I'll move exclusively to the 39 for a couple of camps after I feel like I have a better hand on the K4 and the KI-61.

I use 650 for all the 30mm planes.  It hasn't messed up my hit % at all (normally 10-13%) and I can deliver a fatal blow out to 800 yards.
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.
