I know I read somewhere about the abundance of P-51D/K skins, but I've done a couple "mock ups" of this 355th Fighter Group/354th Fighter Squadron. P-51D 44-72361 WR-N. Any input or tips would be great as this is my first attempt at skinning (thanks to Krusty's awesome walk-through).

Nope, final product :noid  Yes thats a rough draft, just trying to get the silver right, and panel orinetations. No insignias, no rivets, no details.

I'd suggest making the areas pure white (100%) and make the panel lines pure black 100% opacity, until you get them all lined up as you want. Keeps the other colors from being a distraction when you need to work in a pixel's width here, 2 pixels there.

Then when the panels are "lined up" turn them back down to 30% opacity while you do the coloring. I say this so you can help align certain patterns or color shapes based on the panel lines, if need be, and you want to see them better.

Then mix them however you want when the coloring is done, so that you get the end result with subtle panel lines, rivets, etc.

Well, you of course realize that Skuzzy has said there will be no more P-51D skins accepted.

With that out of the way.. do not fall into the trap that many do of skinning the wings with "aluminum".

They were filled and painted grey.  Panel lines should be hardly visable except where they are accessible like gun bays.

Also use the "Z" key and "[ ]" keys to zoom in and out to get a closer look for your screen shots.

Good luck and let me know if I can help.

Fencer or anyone, can you post closeup photos of the top of the P-51 wing, showing what the grey paint looks like vs natural aluminum?   I've been curious about this issue since I first heard about it, and my 51 resources are pretty limited...

Thought it was aluminum/silver paint, not gray.

Well.. we could get out a color wheel and argue about it, but I respect you too much.  So I will say that while I think its Grey we will call it silver.

Aluminum is a metal and when skinning it is very difficult to get correct.  The best way to show the difference between the aluminum fusalage and the wing is to use a light gray color.

Note the bare (although highly polished fusalage)

The flaps are also un painted.

Twilight Fear was prehaps the most authentic P-51D there.  Note the complete lack of polishing of the fusalage.

Lil Margaret is my favorite, this plane looks like it flew in from 1945.

Preddy's Last Cripes A'Mighty.  Note the grey appearance in some light.

Here is a P-47D40 with a bare aluminum wing.

This P-51D has a painted fusalage as well.
