Here's a question for those of you who play Eve....  Is it the kind of game that I can just jump right into?  Or should I spend a bit of time reading up on it before starting the two week trial?

The tutorial AI agents will quickly provide u with the basics plusw some cash/ships/skill books. Make it a point to go thru the 3 initial tutorial agents, then u'll know enought to navigate ur way around. Then go to Sister something out of the Sister of Eve corporation in Arnon, she'll provide u with missions that can be made with what u have, a Frigate/Destroyer. By the time u are done with that, u'll havesome money in the bank to start what u want.

As frustrating as it may seem, spend your first 1.6 mil character points on "learning skills", it will make a load of difference in the long run, like 3 weeks to learn a skill level rather than 5 weeks.

Personaly I find EVE plenty borring, with the occasional satisfaction to ruin some's else day that meant u wrong.
Dat jugs bro.

I'd say spend some time reading up on it before you start your trial.. That way you know what you're getting into and can get started making money right away however you decide you'd have most fun.. I personally like shooting stuff, so I went the military route running missions etc when i first started, but there are people who like the mining/industrial or the trade/business career paths..

I have 2 characters.. My main character does fighting (PVP), the other makes all my money by trading materials and items (buy low sell high tactic).

If you have any questions when you're reading about stuff feel free to ask.. :)

Thanks Nova...  Let me ask you this...  Is there a particular Race/Faction that is better suited for a new player who knows very little?

Not really.. You can customize yourself to do whatever you want to do when you first create your character. If you're going the business or industrial route, I think most ships are pretty much the same so you dont have to worry too much about that, but if you're going the military route do your research on each race's ships and what they do and how they work during missions and within fleets (PVP).. That will save you from wanting to do something else if/when you get to that point. My advice though is stay away from heavy missle ships if you're doing PVP.. There are missle countermeasures that can keep you from doing any damage to someone, but there's nothing thats going to stop a bullet or laser.. :) Stealth Bombers however are the exception to that rule.. They do massive damage when they hit so those are really the only missle ships I fly..  :rock

I'm a Caldari player, and have a lot of missile skills.  Missile use in PvP is one of the most hotly debated topics in the game, and I won't go into that.  But, missiles are the supreme mission running weapon system (mission being against NPC enemies).  So, if you're going to be a Caldari player with a combat focus, use the early missile skills you get for running missions, just don't marry them long-term.  Once you get your feet under you and want to do some serious PvP, you can start training a lot of gun skills.  My favorite solo PvP ship is a missile boat, but solo PvP is very niche.  For fleet PvP (which can number hundreds of ships per side), guns are a better weapon.  Caldari and Minmatar races have some very unique ships and capabilities, but they are very skill intensive, whereas Gallente and Amarr are a little more straightforward to train (at least IMO).

Good luck though.  I really enjoy the game and hope you do as well.

Nova, what corp/alliance are you in?  I'm in Paxton Industries/Paxton Federation myself.

You can also fly other races ships anyway.

One of my characters flies Caldari and Minmatar, the other Amarr and Gallente. This way I can pretty much fly whatever I want in the game. One day I will train for capital ships, but I want everything maxed pretty much before I do it.

Well, I took the plunge today...   First character is Gallente, for better or worse.  Haven't fiddled with it much, should have more time to look into it tomorrow.

Well I rejoined EVE last month.  So far its only a two man Corp. but Grumpy Old Guys (GOG), is in Caldari space.  Working out of Funtanian.
I agree with the Run the Tutorial Missions.  I didn't, I migrated from Gallente to Caldari space before I completed all the missions.  So I had to learn some things the hard way.  Ouch!
Don't jump into a Corp right away.  Look around for a couple of weeks.  Some Corps are as bad as the players.  Will rip you off.  I have seen as much as 100% Corp taxes.  So for cash you get nothing.

If you make it to Caldari Space look up the Grumpy Old Guys.  Yrogerg Nord, CEO

Am I correct to assume that I should start a second character, if nothing else, just to get the training started?  Does it matter if the second character is a different Race/Faction?

Yeah two characters are pretty standard, I used to have three (but couldn't justify keeping all of them). It does not matter what the other race is, you can always just fly him/her to where you are. In my corp of RL friends we have a mix of gallente, amarr, and caldari. Race does not mean much in this game. Any character can train any other ship types.

Gallente was a good choice, good for PvP and PvE. They are a very well rounded race IMO, strong ships in all classes.
