Occassional No Video on boot up
« on: August 28, 2009, 08:41:10 PM »
I'd say about once or twice a month, I'll boot my computer up and I won't get any video output.  That is, my monitor(s) will say no signal.  I have an EVGA 8800 GTS 640mb.  I know for a fact the computer properly loads into windows because the software on my Logitech G15 correctly loads up and is displayed on its little LCD (which only happens when you get into Windows).  As soon as I hit the reset button, it will boot normally.  There are two monitors hooked up to it and neither display anything.

Anyone ever run into this?  Should I look into RMA'ing the card?

I have had that happen on my 8800GTS as well. I have tried rolling back to the first set of drivers but it still does it. I think the card just wants to take a break sometimes and I don't want it too. It is out of warranty by a year so it is a crap shoot if I could get anything done.

Might be a sign of a weak power supply. I've had similar symptoms when I added a 4th hd and 420w power supply.

If the voltage drops during boot the card won't initialize.

Interesting.  At least in windows my voltages all read good.  But thats a good theory.  I should be under my cap by quite a bit in wattages, however it may be the 12V rails getting overloaded on boot.  I've never experienced any problems in windows that would make me suspect power supply.  PSU is about 2 1/2 years old.

I think in another post Skuzzy or Pyro (can't remember which) stated their system uses more power on initial boot than any other time. Might want to check the ratings on those 12v rails.

The rails are properly 'amperaged' with the card.  With the exception of adding a 3rd hard drive and a little overclocking, its the same parts since when I built it in Jan' 07.  I'm more inclined to be related to the aging of parts, mainly the PSU.  Right now its more of a nuisance than anything.  But it can be a warning sign of some bigger happening down the road.
