Microphone trouble
« on: August 28, 2009, 10:47:07 PM »
My microphone works fine in windows.  It's not muted, the volume is all the way up, boost is checked.  I lowered sound accel to 3/4's in dxdiag.

It worked in game this afternoon for about an hour, but when I logged back in, no vox.  All other sounds are fine.  Any ideas?  Wave-in is not checked, checking it did not work.

I even tried a fresh install of Aces High, with no luck.

This seems to be only game related, since the mic works in windows (XP).

I turned off some start-up processes (the same ones which I've always done), could this do it?  Which process controls the mic?

This sounds familiar but I can't remember the solution. I guess I'm no help. What kind of soundcard?

Soundblaster Audigy, which is the same card I used in my old rig for several years.

Minimize the game and go to desktop? Can you still record in windows?

What processes are you shutting down and how are you shutting them?

Do you have another comm program like Team Speak? Do you have transmit mapped to any hardware? Or simply default to F-12...ect?

Is the Mic USB or does it use stereo connections to rear of computer?

i have the same sound card and learned a couple of things.

dont plug in your headphone input
check the on/off button on the cord and I mean switch it on and off same for volume
make sure the mike volume is not all the way down on the control panel
check the booster is selected
check your volume control in ah windows.

mike seems to go away randomly for me from a couple of hours to a couple of days and come back all by itself.  never have been able to figure out why.

oh yeah and check to see if you or somebody else forgot about it and walk away from the computer with the headset still on your head.  have done that many, many times and had to replace at least 5 mikes so far.  lol

I think thats the problem. Ive had 2 just up and quit working in AH. went to a USB headset.

I have a gigabyte board myself, have you tried the onboard sound to see if you like it?

I couldn't get the onboard sound to recognize the microphone at all.  Well, it noticed (alerted me) when I plugged it in, but wouldn't allow me to adjust the volume for it.  I got frustrated, and just installed my old Soundblaster card.

The microphone works.  When I test it in Windows, it works fine, every time.  Between the volume being turned up, and the boost enabled, I can raise folks out of the graveyard down the road, and dogs from 4 farms down the road start to beller.

It's a stereo-type hook-up for the back of the tower, but I have ports for it in front of the tower.  It works fine in both places, because the front ports are just extension cords from the back ports.

Since it works in Windows, it leads me to believe it isn't the headset, plug-ins, sound card, windows sound settings, etc...

It works in windows when I minimize the game, but won't work at all in the game.  My volumes in game are maxed out too, and I've tried it with the mute checked, as well as unchecked in windows.  The mute switch on the mic cord has been broken for a few years now, but it isn't muted (works in windows...).

I have the inputs for the game mapped to my stick for both channel and range.  The buttons work, because when I try to talk on range, people say "you're just beeping minute-man" or "I can't hear your voice mitten-man, just the beeps".  Sometimes they say the same, but substitute "motion-man" instead.  When I tune to myself, my name pops up on the screen, but no voice sounds transmit...

The processes I shut down are only in the partition I use for AH.  I shut down all of them except for 18, which is about the minimum needed to play the game.  I shut them down in Administrative Services, Services, and they simply don't start up when I'm in the AH partition, Windows Updates, print spooler, etc.  I start my computer in my "normal" partition for normal computer use (with all processes running), and restart in AH partition, where I only play the game.  No anti-virus or anything on that partition, so I do nothing but play the game there.  I've needed to do this in the past to free up resources to be able to play the game decent, I probably don't need to anymore.

did you disable the onboard sounds in the bios before installing the sound card?  I belive this is a requirement for most cards.  mine will not work unless i disable the onboard sound first, then reinstall the drivers. I have forgotten to disable it in bios before then the sound/mike would only work sometimes.

Figured it out-  I had to disable my onboard MB sound in Device Manager.  As soon as I did that, Mic worked in game.

Thanks for the help guys!

You should delete the on-board sound drivers too.
