I really like that red tail. Make the tail feathers flashy and you get more interest, and more kills.  :x

Thanks Dan, once again I am impresssed by your vast knowledge.  In my own attempt to gain knowledge, I went to the library the other night looking for a book that had technical data of the 38 and other planes.  I arrived at our public library at 5:45PM, as I walk in I hear "your public library will be closing in 10 min".  Grrr..I grab a book called Fighters of WWII by David Donald (Big picture of a I-16, Ki84, 109, Hurri, and 38 on it) check out my books and rush home.  I open to the table of contents and find P-38 on page 161,  except on page 161 is thw Meteor :(. Wow, what a disappointment,  I guess I should have got Bombers of WWII!

Thanks again,

Nathan

Taking a closer look at the redtail Judy Ann profile, its pretty easy to spot the leading edge landing light, and easy to make out the dive flaps under wing.   So the red tail Judy Ann is a P-38L or late J as Dan states.

There are still a few 38L slots open, but the J is full so any new J skins go into a rotation.    I've jumped back into skinning with the 38L so I've lots of projects in various states - I could do Judy Ann based off this profile and have something showable pretty quickly, but I don't want to step on any toes of anyone who wants to take a crack at skinning the Lightning.   I can keep busy reworking my existing Ls.

I have some 82ND photos. Got these two with stripes on the boom :) no red tail though. :(

Still no red tail?

Oooh thats a nice one it has teeth but not complete :furious

:furious Bugger still no tail? five in a row. :uhoh

This one looks painted?? Nah can't be sure

:D Got it a painted RED tail complete with a stripe too no less.

:huh Crap a ringer no red tail.

Well a partial painted tail but what colour?

Take two.

Take three.

Take four.

These two look like they have some colour variation. Candy cane booms on the first maybe? :pray

Just no way of knowing unless there is some colour photos :O. :x

Can't find a picture of Judy Ann. But I think you have enough to get you a red tailed 38 in the game. :aok

I think what they're after is a J to go with the 82nd 38L that Oboe already did.  there is an 82nd G that Oboe did as well.  A red tail J is probably not one that will be found however as those squadron colored tails are all L models.

Well I started a J after the first pic Stokes posted...now this has no wheathering to it, or kill markings...

I'm concerned though, I have no idea if the right side of the plane has identical markings.  I also added anti glare on the inboard side of the engines (seemed common enough) Do you think the red is too bright? Any thoughts?

Oh well maybe Oboe might use it to trade out his black tailed L model for a red one?

Just do a red tailed one.  Its not like there are not multiple planes from the same squads in the other 38 skin types.

LOL Copr you're breaking in the new skin the right way for SAPP!   I never thought of doing screenshots like that.

If it were me I would tone donw the red (desaturate) a bit, and add a bare little shadow behind the red prop spinner.   Everybody has their own style though.   If you really want to get some ideas on detailing, take a look at Fester's 38J skin.   A real close look, all over the plane.   Go external view on the runwy and spend 15-20 minutes just examining how he handles screw/rivet shading and glare, the tire rims, exhaust stains - everything.   You'll see lots of things you can do to a skin if you want to spend the time on it.    Also his panel lines are superb.   The default P-38 panel lines have some errors in them.

Have fun!

What about a 2nd P-38L for the 82nd, this time the red-tailed Judy Ann?   I know the 80th has a couple versions of Jay Robbins "Jandina" in tha game (both 38Js, one bare metal, one OD) so multiple mounts from the same pilot aren't a problem.   Plus there are still a couple free 38L slots, so she could possibly make it into the game without waiting in a rotation.

Here's what she looks like on my 38L base.   Any interest?

Beautiful Oboe! We wouldn't mind another L skin but we'd really love it on the J despite the wait.
