It was originally Tesla's idea.  Edison thought he was crazy.

Has he ever heard of the square cube law of broadcasting?

Transmission power reduces in a logarithmic curve, that is the further away the broadcast antenna, the weaker the signal. to make this work he would need an antenna every 150 feet or so.....

There is a reason that radio stations broadcast in kilo watts and receivers have to detect micro watts.

Of course I only worked in broadcast power for 25 years.......

You sir.... Are 110% correct!!!  But that's really a modulation thing.  Unless your talking about what will one day soon, be totally gone.... And change what the actual definition of TV broadcasting is...........

I'd relate this towards the original DC/AC debate and the fight between Edison & Tesla... One day, hopefully soon, they will figure a way to safely, and effectively, pass it through the earth...... similar to AM Band radio broadcasts.

Has he ever heard of the square cube law of broadcasting?

(IMPORTANT POINT - The "original DC/AC debate" had nothing to do with the earth)

They call it "common sense", then why is it so uncommon?

Tesla actually built a transmission tower before Rockefeller and Morgan pulled his funding. They realized that there was no way to bill for electricity when anyone could just stick a grounding rod in the earth and run their gear.
The transmission used scalar waves, and one large tower could theoretically run practically the entire country.  Tesla conceived of one tower powering the enitre Earth, but I personally feel that was a little optimistic.  Before he died, Tesla had reduced the unit size down to where it would fit in a suitcase, with the idea that everyone could buy one to run their home/farm.
By then, he was bankrupt, and the Westinghouse conglomerate (which was only still in business becaue Tesla had agreed to not take his royalties when they had financial trouble) had a financial and legislative lock on power transmission over wire.
There are a lot of people currently working independently on reviving this technology, with some suscess reported here and there, but I think it will be a while before anything comes of it.  A lot of Teslas note have disappeared, not to mention his lab being burned to the ground.

just read an article about this a couple weeks ago......... I especially like the part about the density of the magnetic field required would be about the same as the earths magnetic field............ maybe gravity will be a thing of the past LOL

Gravity is not directly related to magnetism, researchers do believe they behave in a similar manner tho.

Pound for pound the Earth has a very weak magnetic field....

I "think" your slightly mistaken in regards to passing AM radio "thru" the earth. Atleast at any real distance. IIRC the Navy uses a super low band frequency to send messages thru the earth at great distances to our subs.
I dont think AM has the range to be really effective.
I remember reading about it in some tech journals awhile back, it is also associated with the "HUM" in some areas of N.M. (I think). I have the info at home so ill have to wait to post the actual article and info after work.
Crap now I gotta redo my cool sig.....crap!!! I cant remeber how to do it all !!!!!

I love it when super smart people always say things like
Quote
"Five years from now, this will seem completely normal," he said.

"The biggest effect of wireless power is attacking that huge energy wasting that goes on where people buy disposable batteries," he said. Watch Giler demonstrate the idea

Sometimes they are absolutely brilliant when it comes to the science of the invention but they have ZERO concept of the requirement to actually put the concept into a truly cheap and easy use for the people of the world...not to mention the corporate people who will want to control it and "phase" it in over the next 50 years...all so they can charge great sums of money to those of us that would benefit from it.

Nope.  Didn't say that at all.

All I did was point out how an AM freq's pass through the Earth much better then FM band freqs.  And used that to illustrate how wireless electricity can one day work.  Think like this..... You go through a tunnel and your FM is gone but you switch to AM and you still have reception.  (Although today many long tunnels are equiped with FM transceivers to boost FM reception.

And that clearly one-sided tech journal.... Did they mention or define what "dirty power" is?  How about "grounding problems?"   Odds are by you (or by there) there are many heavy metals in the Earth adding to radio frequency "buzzing"
