Wi-Power internet
« on: September 18, 2009, 11:40:29 AM »
A relatively new option for rural areas, it is wireless high speed, uses a small dish to pick up from a nearby base station, not a satellite.

Before, my only options for my home away from home are satellite, dial-up and maybe cellular.

Does anyone have experience with Wi-Power?

Would it have the same type of lag issues that make satellite a poor option for AH?

Land base wi-fi connections should not suffer the latencies typical of a satellite connection, unless the ISP is using satellite for its backbone link.

However, wi-fi will suffer the same bit error problems that any wireless connection will have.  A physical link will always have fewer errors than any type of wireless link.

It depends on the weather.

Ive used WiFI for bout 5 years now........ the only time weather plays a part is when theres a cake of ice on the ant. (rare where Im at) or if something is totally obstructing the ant (like if I put a trash barrel over it)

I usually get pings to HTC depending on internet traffic between 15-40........ never had any issues whatsoever that was related to having wifi specifically......... and no more latency than any other type of connection

there are different types of ants. so be sure to ask when you get yours...... the most relevant being ......

line of sight vs non line of sight...... makes a difference if you have alot of obstructions....... trees for the most part dont hinder line of sight ...... but if you have a heavily foliaged tree very close to your ant in the way then it could be troublesome....... I had to trim some branches when I had line of sight

also ask what technology they are using if you have a choice.......... its inportant....... kind of like your wireless home phone.......... they used to be 900Mhz then they went to 2.4Ghz then 5.8Ghz........... most wifi companies are at 2.4 right now....given the choice higher is better

also note that just like your wireless router........ your cordless telephone can interfere if on the same frequency......... so you might have to switch some channels around

when I initially got mine I was getting discos everytime the neighbor had a phone call lol......... glad I figured that out

trying to think of what else there is to know......... well tons Im sure but thats whats on the tip of my tongue :)
