P-36 HAWK
« on: October 10, 2009, 01:53:00 PM »
Hey I was watching a program on pearl harbor and it had a brief segment on the p-36 hawk. I shot down one zero before being shot to hell. The pilot managed to get it down safely. Since it did see "action" I think something like that could be a good EW addition. Just a thought.......http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P-36_Hawk

If it were to be added at all... it's not going to be its US service record that gets it in.  A few flew for the British, French, and Chinese in either foreign built or purchased versions.  But its basically an underpowered P-40, and pretty much outclassed by everything in EW now.

It would make a great addition for special events filling gaps in the early war PTO, ETO, and Med.

I like the idea....

Gap-less allied plane set against 2 Italian birds or less than half a Japanese plane set!

I'm not saying it should go to the head of the line by any means.
Just saying it would make a good addition along with the rest of a long list. ;)

At least the Italians used enough German aircraft that there's legitimate substitutions for almost any scenario the Reggia flew in. As opposed to using Bf-110s to represent Ki-45s. :p

Hawk would be nice, but definitely not a priority.

*cough*

From Wikipedia

"On 8 September 1939, aircraft from Groupe de Chasse II/4 were credited with shooting down two Luftwaffe Messerschmitt Bf 109Es, the first Allied air victory of World War II on the Western front. During 1939–1940, French pilots claimed 230 confirmed and 80 probable victories in H75s against only 29 aircraft lost in aerial combat. Of the 11 French aces of the early part of the war, seven flew H75s. The leading ace of the time was Lieutenant Edmond Marin la Meslée with 15 confirmed and five probable victories in the type. H75-equipped squadrons were evacuated to French North Africa before the Armistice to avoid capture by the Germans. While under the Vichy government, these units clashed with British aircraft over Mers el-Kébir and Dakar. During Operation Torch in North Africa, French H75s fought against U.S. Navy F4F Wildcats, losing 15 aircraft to seven shot down American planes. From late 1942 on, the Allies started re-equipping French units formerly under Vichy and the H75s were replaced by P-40s and P-39s."

The P-40 was basically a P-36 fuselage with the Allison inline engine
mounted.

It had almost the exact same shape except for the nose, due to the different UNDERPOWERED radial engine.  The rest of the body was almost identical.  The reason the P-40 was developed was due to the poor performance of the P-36.  The quickest and easiest way for Curtiss to to this was to reuse the P-40 frame.  And it worked out very well.

The Twin Wasp of the P-36 put out 1050hp while the Allison of the P-40B put out 1040hp. If we look at the Hawk75 which is more likely to get into the game, it's also over 1000lbs lighter than the P-40B. Hawk75's wingloading is rather close to that of the Brewster Model 239 when both are fully fueled. In 1 vs 1 situation, given equal pilots, the only thing a P-40B can do against it is to extend straight and level, come back and extend again. In a many vs many situation the speed advantage of the P-40B gives the edge to it.

P-36 served well with the French prior and during the Battle of France and served the Dutch rather well in the Dutch East Indies.  It's got a place in the EW plane set.
