Stories like this will encourage me to send my kid to a private school....

Send them to one out here, I suppose. They're all strict Christian schools. No drugs or alcohol, but no friends outside the Cult due to thinking they're better than everyone else all the time.

Metal detectors, drug dogs, armed cops, cameras...sounds more like prison than school. I remember the good 'ol days of sneaking out to make a donut run, or getting a pass from the auto shop teacher to go to pick-a-part. When my school got it's first hall camera, a couple of us seniors sat in the security office learning how to zoom in and out on girl's tulips as they walked down the hall. Good times...  :old:

Hell, we pull that same toejam. Course ya gotta do it during the 10 minutes between classes, or sign into class, and then sneak out. as for the security cameras, we aim for points higer than the ass.

We don't even have an auto-shop  :cry. It's really funny when I remember that I'm the only kid at that school that knows how to change oil or do anything to a car, one day some girl had a question somewhere "What does washer fluid low mean?" LOL.  I go to a private preppie school,no cool courses like auto or woodworking etc...,just a bunch of BS arts and languages,AND NOT EVEN GOOD LANGUAGES! It's really lame that they don't give alternatives for the people that would rather get down and dirty with some hands on work.

That's because private schools are for "higher learning" and mechanical and the lower engineering courses are seen as being "hillbilly." Yeah, bothers me too.

Higher learning my butt. You aren't gonna be able to do beans in life no matter how much you know about Shakespeare's affairs with his pencil. When you go out to start your car and it dosen't work or something in your house is screwed up,you're gonna look like a real tard when you have not the first idea what to do even though you got a shiny PhD,ya know?

Our public schools scare me, we had a Boy Scouts or CAP thing one friday where we went and ran a bowling alley for some 6th,7th,and 8th graders, of course I signed up for it because we got out of school  :D. The 7/8th graders were the size of a sub-compact and then some. And even our public schools don't really have anything hands on, once you get away from the city you see more of it though.

I spent my life in the electrical/computer engineering wing working with the metal and wood shops. I know exactly what you mean. But I'm also a choir student and know that side of the story, too.

The dirty work prepares you for life. The arts expand your horizons and give an overall boost to your culture and learning. Students need both, but the snobs see the grease and funny smells and say "We don't need any of that!"

Its a balance, get TOO far out, and they don't have enough money for that. Some where inbetween with about 300-600 students seems about right for that stuff.

Which is why it's so much fun to know both sides. Sure,SOME of the arts and "higher learning" is good, but you only need so much of that. Kids at my school not only don't understand and don't know much about that, but they know absolute ZERO about real life skills. That's where I think God blessed me, I am not only one of the top kids in my class, but hands down the top man when it comes to common sense, fixing stuff, and general knowledge that you don't learn in the classroom.

There's about 1,500 students at my High School IIRC but no, we don't have metal detectors.
My school district is so big that there's another similarly sized (bigger?) school in it.
It's not even the city's district :)
nevermind, 2 post further down and u answered it...

Lol, same here. The only thing the kids who aren't good in school know how to do is roll a cigarett. And the kids who ARE good in school know almost nothing not learned in books.

In my case, I know so much about practical things simply because the books are too difficult. There just AREN'T high school level books on engineering. There are manuals you could use to crush a small child, and that's it. So instead we're taught how to not electrocute ourselves, warned of the sharp objects, then given a big box of crap to make something out of with access to the "physics lab" with all the high-tech equipment, heavy power supplies, and "throw all your old, un-needed electronic junk here" bins. It was great.

It's how I got an Atari 800 out of the deal. :D
