37mm Field gun Tracers
« on: November 23, 2009, 09:58:04 AM »
A two-fold question:  Is it possible to turn off tracers in the 37mm field guns?  If yes, is this realistic as far as real-world 37mm tracers being used or not used?

Thanks,

No, it's not possible. If you turn off tracers you only turn them off on your end, everyone else will see tracers coming from GVs, field guns, and aircraft gunner postions.

CC response Mar.  I have been killed by field guns where apparently I just did not see the tracers.  I just need verification on this matter...

I'm not sold on this, for field guns. Can someone verify? I'm pretty certain I have been killed by field guns where I did not see tracers on my end.

I'm still waiting on the ability to have a tracers on/off setting for individual planes that you can select easily in the hanger, and is saved on a per plane/vehicle basis. For example, I don't use tracers when I'm in an aircraft, but I like to have them on for Wirbels and Field Guns. When in the heat of base defense, it's usually too much time (not to mention even remembering) to fumble through the unwieldy options to turn tracers on, and then turn them off again when fighter hangers come back up and there is a small window for launch between vulchings.

It seems like a small game feature that many would appreciate.

In real world terms, tracers would have been used (every 4/5 round) for the simple reason of aiming....the site is only useful up to the point you start firing. Then all it can be used for is a general guide.

I am able to aim and hit with the field guns without issue.  My issue is whether or not the tracers can be turned off in such a large calibre gun, and whether or not that is realistic.  I believe that I have been shot by field guns that have tracers off. I am open minded enough to be corrected on this though.  If you can turn them off and it is not realistic, then I will move this to the wishlist to get it corrected.

I believe Mar is correct, any caliber weapon above 30mm the tracer is only disabled on your frontend.

A simple test, turn off tracers on IL2 with 37mm guns and fire at a friend and ask if it's seen then do same with the 23mm guns,I sure you'll see that the 37mm fires a tracer but you wont see it.The same goes for GV's or ground guns, you just cant change the gun size.

Friendlies will see tracers regardless if you have them disabled or not.  Turn off the tracers on your machine guns and then fire at a friendly, he'll see the tracers.

You used to be able to disable the tracers on field guns a few years ago but I think that's been changed within the last couple of years.

peripheral vision in our plane is only 140 degrees max. there could have been tracers you didn't have the angle to see.

i do agree with you at least the tracer on/off selection should be limited to just planes so it wouldn't effect gv's or soft guns.

Its right that tracers should be historically accurate on the big guns after all it would be unfair on people practising the historical act of vulching and scorewhoring to get shot down by an unseen enemy weapon when they went to the trouble of destroying all practical means of the field defending itself.   :rofl

"The nicest guy in Aces High!" How can this be in your sig when you hurt my feelings like you do  :cry  :lol

This what your talking about! Your talking about the field guns a player can use, in order for you to believe that a manned field gun took you down all the auto ack has to be down otherwise you'd just say oh the auto ack got me. You had to have been in a plane because it takes quite a few hits to kill gvs with a field gun plenty of time for the gv to spot where its coming from.
I'm speaking from experience here so i'll 'contribute' here lol usually I only jump in a field gun when all other means of defence are gone, I don't mind lifting off a capped field but usually won't if its obvious its been set up for a vulch ie for people to get easy kills with no danger to themselves. So what I do is sit and wait for everyone to get comfy flying low over the field then when someone flys real near to me a pop of one or two rounds watch their  wing fall off or them explode snicker to myself look around to make sure nobody spotted it and quietly wait for the next one.

So basically make sure you check all guns when de-acking a base if in a plane, if you think your getting shot by one in a gv he may be shooting one or two off while your not looking it should be obvious in a gv they nearly always spot you. I still think my previous post is relevant to this if you don't like it what can I say.. get a sense of humour sir  :lol :aok
