The only problem that I see here is that you are taking off from a WWII base.  ;) 

Yes, the gauges were actually turned on their sides.

The gauges were turned on their sides was that both rpm and ASI needles would be pointing somewhat straight up so that any deviation would quickly get pilot's attention with just one clance. Similar setups can be found from race cars, etc...
