Anyone Using the X65F?
« on: March 26, 2010, 07:49:40 PM »
I got mine two weeks ago along with Saitek Pro rudder pedals.  So far so good but it has taken some time to setup properly.  Overall, the accuracy is great and it's very smooth in terms of deflection vs force applied.  I've spent the last two weeks getting it mapped and setting the axis curves etc.  It seems to require a bit of dampening to prevent the 'don't move you controls so rapidly' message when in a hard turn fight.  I'm really starting to adjust to the motionless stick now.  Actually, the transition to the non-moving stick has been a lot easier than the transition from a twisty to pedals.  If anyone else is using this stick and wants to share their experience or tips, I'm all ears.

If you like the Sick Puppy Custom Sound Pack the please consider contributing for future updates by sending a months dues to Hitech Creations for account "Chalenge." Every little bit helps.

Can't wait to get it all figured out. Probably gonna take a day just to mount it to my desk and get all the controls I need integrated into the setup. :joystick:

If it takes full power to taxi to the hanger, your gear is probably up.

How 'bout a detailed review for those of us thinking about this stick?

I'd be very interested in how it works when just slight pressure is used such as refining a shot, particularly when going from positive to negative G over the stick center position as happens when you're dead six on someone.  In my experience, I've yet to find a stick that doesn't have dead-zone, mechanical slop, and break-out force issues at the stick's center position.  This basically means you cannot transition from small positive G, to small negative G inputs and back again smoothly.  We see that as excessive "nose bounce".  Eliminating the gimbals would help in that mechanical slop and break-out forces are eliminated but dead-zone (and now hysterisis) issues could be a problem as it seems killrDan is suggesting.  In a real aircraft you usually deal with this by "pre-loading" the stick with a bit of nose-down trim.  This smooths stick response by eliminating breakout forces and taking out the slop in the mechanical system but this doesn't work with joysticks that provide no trim feedback.  If the X65F is a significant step forward in this area then it could certainly be worth the $$$.

does the primary trigger have a 2 position switch like the X52 and Pro? So I barely squeeze for main guns, and depress even further (2nd click) for all guns etc...

One review here: http://www.flightsim.com/main/review/x65f.htm

I am seriously liking the thought of those 8 hat switches!!!  :O :O
Afk for a year or so.  The name of a gun turret in game.  Falanx, huh?
Apparently I'm in the 20th FG 'Loco Busters', or so the legend goes.

That's a nice review, thanks for the link.  It goes a bit beyond the typical "review" that just tells you how many switches it has and what the packing material is like and discusses some of its performance characteristics.  Unfortunently, it could go a lot further.

Ok guys, I've had this thing a while now and have somewhat adjusted to it.  Her's my evaluation of some of the pros and cons:

Negatives:
a) No two position trigger like the X52.  I miss that feature, especially when flying a plane with limited cannon rounds.
b) Throttle has too much resistance, even with the tensioner loosened fully.  This seems to be getting better with use.
c) I still sometimes get that "don't move your controls so rapidly" or whatever during saddle-ups when I'm really moving the controls to keep the six.  this is frustrating as h3ll.  HELP...anyone have suggestions?  I could understand it if I were stick stirring but thats not the case.  Maybe Skuzzy can help...HE knows everything   :D  This is the most significant issue I've had with the stick.
d) Stick ergonomics are less than ideal. My hands are reasonably large but it still took time to adjust.  It's a bit of a stretch to the 8 way hat switch.  I wouldn't let this influence a buy/no buy decision though.  You'll get accustomed to it.

Positives:
a) Plenty of hat switches and buttons.  It's truly a HOTAS stick. I still have switches left that need programming.
b) This is a GV'ers dream stick (and thats an understatement).  Shot precision and placement are so much better than with my old X52!  It was very apparent from the first GV sortie that the long range zoom in shots are no longer a product of luck.  If you like to GV, you won't be disappointed. This holds true for air to air shooting also.  It won't make you a deadeye marksman (I know cuz my marksmanship sux) but it will improve your shooting too a degree.
c) Force setting is adjustable in flight.  I experimented with it at first but I now keep mine on F3 which is second adjustment up from lightest.  You can also set y axis and x axis separately in the Saitek software.
d) Overall quality of the stick appears very good.  I calibrate it occasionally but it really doesn't need it. It never jumps calibration like my X52 did.

One other obvious quality I'd comment on is the fact that the stick doesnt move.  I wouldn't classify that as positive or negative but it will take a bit of time to re-learn how much force is required to yield a given control surface deflection.  There's no tactile feedback like you get with a conventional stick.

In summary, my old X52 is sitting in a box in a closet and that's where it's going to stay.  I'm liking the way this stick handles more every day!

 :salute

Killrdan if your getting the stick stirring message try scaling your stick down a bit near the center.

how is the rudder control with the twist compared to the x52? I like the twist on the x52 but like everything i've heard about this stick so far but haven't seen anything talking about the twist portion. Thanks.

Heads up on Shifted Modes with the pinkie.

I spent a few days trying to get this to work. With any key but mainly the pinky.

Finally got approved for Saitek BBS. The problem is in documentation. Very poor documetnation on advanced commands using AV8R stick. They need updated (AV8R doesn't have modes!).

To get shifted mode to work, you need both the Pinkie and the MODE you want to use it in, selected in the shift select key box. If not it doesn't know what you want.

I used Pinkie Mode 1 and all was well.
