Plans for WWI Events Soon?
« on: March 30, 2010, 05:33:50 PM »

Given that the WWI is forever going to be just a furball lake, it REALLY would be nice to have some historical or even semi-historical, or even just semi-realistic WWI scenarios to wet the thirst of those who would like a little more depth than the mosh pit (which in itself is fine mindless fun and target practice).  Without trying to change the WWI arena, the compromise is to have cool special events.  That'll be where I hope to get my historical fix, not the meat-grinder.

Balloons would be nice someday.  Tanks, bombers, supply trains, zeppelins, troop/truck convoys to strafe  :x, etc.....
But even with what we have now we could do something couldn't we?
Dawn aerodrome raid: One side is forced to delay takeoff until just before a enemy patrol reached their field.  A couple of manned ack….Sirens, planes scrambling to get airborne.  One of these missions for each side.  Scored on net kills.

Convoy Attack: and convoy of supply trucks are scheduled to pass along a stretch of road.  A squadron of fighters are sent out to strafe.  Defending squadron to intercept.    One of these missions for each side.  Scored on net kills, +-Destroyed trucks.

Fighter Sweep:  Take a squadron to a specified sector.  Find and destroy any enemy aircraft.  An enemy squadron is coming the other direction with similar orders. Camels vs. Fokkers. A couple of these scattered across a front.   Scored on net kills.

Observers and Escorts:  F.2b as fast observers.  Camels for escort.   D.VII interceptors.  The observers must pass over a set of points behind enemy lines.  To get full credit they must overfly all points and land back at base to deliver film.  They can either choose to throttle back and keep escort near, or firewall it and hope their speed keeps them alive.  Scored on net kills +-successfully photo’d waypoints.

What else???

It doesn't have to be super fancy.  The WWI will never be as big an event as the WWII stuff.  But the WWII guys at least have the MA to get a little goal-oriented flying.  The WWI flyers desperately need something to give them a little immersion and mission context.

I won’t bother arguing to add strat to the WWI arena, but I’d dearly love to fly some events.

Come on.

I’ll give ya a dollar.

 :D,
Wab

Semi-realistic numbers would be low. Don't think it would really be worth an event duplicating a 8v8 fight, for example. Strafing trucks would be pretty hard to do as well given their hardness in AH (and I don't know if that is adjustable -- many things are but don't know about convoys).

With the planes in AH as-is, any WW1 "event" would devolve into the same furball you find in WW1 arena, is my guess.

It couldn't be worse than the WWI arena (in the context of purpose and historical feel).  It might be better.

I think if we can have "Jeep Races"  we could hazard a WWI event.

A historical event in one of the unused arenas would be very nice. The front and base layout are adequate for something simple: use two countries and assign photo recon objectives.  The objectives should be overflown by an F2b within a specified alt range and the photos should be landed.  Set about 8 or 10 objectives for each side.  Open it up for 2 or 3 hours.  The side that gets the most recon done wins.  CMs (what are they called in AH?) would need to be on hand to confirm the recon.  Allow a limited number of F2b for each side, camel for the Allies, and Dr1 for the Central Powers.  When people start getting the hang of it (and as numbers build), eventually you can start introducing limited lives.

Then again, a bunch of guys (or a few squads) could just agree to play by those rules in the main WWI Arena on evening or one weekend afternoon.  It wouldn't affect normal arena play at all.  You'd have to use an honour system and maybe post screenshots as proof of recon.

An event on the current WWI terrain wouldn't add much to the game play, it'd be pretty restrictive IMO and a WWI event on a WWII terrain, with WWII fields wouldn't play well either.

Some of us are expecting a new TE with the WWI fields, and a selection of appropriate objects that can be included, in "two weeks". ;)
Easy in-game again.

Agree 100%.

I didn't make it clear, but I was assuming an event specific (historical/semi-historical) terrain.

I'm just thinking back to Flying Circus..... and considering there are so many players from around the globe (different time zones) I think it would be good to have an historical arena permanently, so nobody misses out. Anyhoo, FC proved that if you get the basics right (two sides, historical a/c each side, airfield capture i.e. a 'mission objective' - could be something else) the players imaginations will do the rest. Some of the stuff we did back then was awesome, planned out in detail and huge fun. Something like this in addition to the main arena would be kool I think, if it's possible. (is it?)

An event: I vote yes and would like to see some events.  Snapshots, races, this-day-in-history(s), etc..
A large-scale high-participant historical event/scenario/renactment: I vote no, historicaly air to air/ground engagements in WWI were done with a small number of aircraft.

Well from a tv program i watched the battle field was 2 muddy for supply trucks so both armys acctually built 1/4 scale train tracks and had 1/4 scale trains to run supply's.

Tho when they get some more aircraft in the ww1 arena like gotha's and sutch like those senario's of bombing supply dumps airfield's and factorys may be available  ;)  :(
