Fleet defense
« on: April 05, 2010, 04:15:01 PM »
Wow, I had the time of my life last night defending a fleet. I think it was C91 vs a rook A230 in orange. It started by simply taking A231 and then taking the Vbase on that island. I then took control of the CV and positioned it within range of A230...they weren't happy with the CV off their coast and we got waves and waves of ord from bombers IB. I was in the 5" and was in command of the CV. We had B26s, 38s, 51s, stukas, 17ss, 24s, lancs, all the works trying to bomb it. We had a pretty good aircraft defense up as well. One of the guys ended up killing A230's ordinance, but I kept the CV still near there as the guys were having a blast.

Many started coming from a nearby base (A19) with higher bombers including the 17s, lancs, 24s, and even 234s at one point. I didn't get many guys before they dropped, but since they came in some sort of conga line with 5-10 minutes between attacks, I was able to plan how to turn the CV, and evade the bombs. the 234s hit, but did not sink. Many other sets also dropped but I evaded accordingly. I think they finally gave up as I started to sail the CV SW as A231 was being attacked.

I then logged after the CV was finally safe and still afloat. Chances are it got sunk later, but I and my defense guys kept it alive through two+ hours of constant bombing and jabo attacks. It was much fun, and I salute each and every guy who was there last night! I didn't know how much fun actually sitting on a CV and turning it was! You get a sense of accomplishment when you send something into hell and it makes it out alive.

Some of the best fights I've had in AH were because of carriers, both from and against.

If you ever turn it again when I am landing I will revoke your driving privileges.  Was a great time defending, my poor F4U-1A took a beating as did the Cv but overall I'd say we did darn well. :)

LOL actually I asked the guy in the other set of guns if I should turn it on you...but I decided not to, it was already doing a wacky course and was trying to get her straightened out!

Oh trust me I am no admiral...just wondering if
A - I got lucky
B - The bombers sucked
C - Combo of both
D - I actually have a good CV turning mechanism...

I'll be up to turnin it around sometime, should be fun to re-test!

Its probably a bad attack plan from the cv killers. I always take the cruiser out first to lessen flak. One or two good shots from 47's and cv flak is almost nil. Then its just a question of cleanup. It is possible to be too high up when dive bombing as well. 12 to 14 is max alt and then begin the juke on the way down. If you have two or three folks diving from different directions it helps break up those good 5 inch shooters.

Definitely. Like I said I am no master, especially with dive bombers. Hard to hit em unless they're diving right at you. Either way, it was the highlight of my night right there...I had fun doing it and racked up some 17 kills before ending sortie.

Some of the most fun I've had was controlling the notorious cruiser fleets in the last Coral Sea scenario. I've always enjoyed thwarting attacks on task groups, but it's much harder to do vs shotgunning Lancs than it is in Scenarios.

You know. everyone thinks its hard to take a CV group down. Simple A/C tactics and more than 3 people and it will go down haha

That won't be the case if a group of gunners and a dedicated controller who know what they're doing get into it. :D But the likelihood of that happening in the MAs is pretty low.
