Interesting observation
« on: April 13, 2010, 08:25:11 AM »
At one time I had knocked down all the graphic detail settings and have been flying like that for months.

Yesterday I maxed them all out again and had a much more difficult time seeing bandits against the terrain.

Could it be that great graphic power isn't so much of an advantage with no icons after all?

I know of people who turn their resolution way down for special events. They say it's easier to see the rendered dots of aircraft at long distances. Perhaps less detailed terrain creates less "clutter" to hide low flying aircraft.

Jaeger's back!     WTH man?  I had no one to blame for anything

This is interesting Jimson.  I was just reading another post about Anistrophic Filtering and how it affected the ground detail.  It used to just about take me a month to get my settings right after an update.  :lol

What I find, in my case (very obsolete computer, and probably vid card).  I can change my screen resolution to 800 x 600 and see enemy at a reasonable distance.  Anything above, I seriously mistake them for dust on the screen.  However, I like a challenge  :joystick: and smoother looking films

I think that I can blame Jaeger for me having to take another month to figure this out  :t

The lower your resolution the less detail, the less detail the bigger the pixels and the more objects stand out. Or it seems to for me.
YMMV

<steps on Jaeger's foot>  Oh, sorry.... I didn't see you there...  :neener:

Shifty, after reading this, I forced my resolution into an even lower resolution and used 16x anistropic filter along with 8xS Antialias and since have been able to see objects further away.  Like you pointed out the detail is not there, but with the filter and antialias, it is still a much clearer picture of what the distant aircraft is doing (heading, and attitude).  :noid

that sonds about right, to me.........

also, their are those with the 27" to 42" monitors who can use more detail , yet still see larger dots/pixels at greater distances.....

for those stuck with 15", 17", 19" monitors.you prob either need to reduce the detail settings, or the screen res & textures sized used or just grin and bare it..... for it all is a crap shot........ have not noticed any "increased immersion" from any of it though.......

I plan on dropping by if I can find some people in the AvsA........ kind of miss the place, used to be my favorite arena.....

I just wished it did not keep on changing ever several months, the way it has for last year or 2.......

TC, hop by Tues. April 20th about 9  :aok

Now, here is a good question.  Does the texture size reduce or increase fighter visibility in your opinion, when using lower texture size?  :headscratch:

What's changed, aside from the maps and icon settings?

gyrene, just go back for the last 2 to 6 years and look at the different attempts to "FIX" or "Attempt" to bring more people to the AvsA, from having allied vs axis battles that run and kep score, to having squads come in , pork every fields radar, troops, ordinance right before said squad's begin their "squad night" to having possibly some squads/groups try and rule the roost as if it is their play ground, to having something similar to a rolling planeset, to where if a side meets it's objective it gets to pick a plane to be added, to etc, etc, etc......

then on top of all that people flaming the way the AvsA is, or people attacking new comers, or attacking the AvsA Staff, etc etc etc.....

heck, I was even a part of being vocal on some occassions...... I was wrong at times, and at times I may have been right, but most times I just expressed my opinion or views, or suggestions ..which are some like: why vulch 1 or 2 guys with 5 or 6 squad mates hovering over a field..... or attack 6 to 8 on 1...etc... ( this was several years ago btw... and then a cple a years before that etc...) funny thing is, it still happens TODAY...... most times with less than 12 people in the arena

but to get right down to it, I loved the AvsA, long before all the stuff kept a changing, or being switched up...... there was nothing wrong with it, and it carried itself perfectly with well known players who brought forth good battles, even balanced sides..... gv battles

every few months or so, someone will come along and say, lets do this, if we do this we might get more people to show up, and a squad or 2 ( or 3 ) will try to become the TOP DOG Squad of the AvsA as if they have a right ......I wish I could choose some better wording.....but that will suffice for now..

it has been a never ending cycle of change since ..well at least since Aces High II was released back in 2004......

the maps and icon settings is just "another change"......... this time for a different NEW group that has come in to make their own little playground........

but what the heck, I said I'll come give it a try.......

that don't sound right, everyone has a right to play where ever they wish........ just don't show up and act like it is your playground and you own the place, and then act like moronic landlords and drive others away from the arena....... and or try and suck up / brown nose any or all of the AvsA Staff to get your way.....

not saying that is what happens or has happened before... but I am also not saying that people did not attempt to try and do such crazy things either in years past.....

Ah, now I understand, and I really hope no one acts in either manner, especially at this point in time. Right now efforts are being made to get the interested parties on the same page and build participation based on some agreed upon guidelines and settings that can't be found in the other arenas. Hopefully it works.

I think it can be a success if people put aside their egos and consider the possibilities...give everything a chance and not form any opinions until they have experienced it at least once.

 :aok Gyrene

TC,

This worries me.  I am thinking that change is good (not always).  The fact is, all of the AvA squads that I have encountered and flew with, want even sided play.  They purposely split and do their best to accomplish this.  The only exception was when there was a forced country time limit, around the time an experiment with side objectives (which brought in the largest number of players).

I personally liked some elements of the experiment, but did not like the polarization and choosing sides.  This is a ghost now in terms of what the AvA presently offers.

You will find that the 1 vs 1 dogfights are still there but need to be announced, to prevent countrymen from interfering.  Group tactics have taken on a new meaning without enemy icons.

In short, flying solo while squads are engaging can be a disheartening experience.  I invite all countrymen on squad vox, and encourage other squads to do so also.  Even then, flying against skilled veteran pilots, I find myself getting shot down 8 out of 10 times.  Frustrating as this can be, it gives me a chance to improve my tactics and SA, and savor my 2 out of 10 victories.

As far as complaints posted about the AvA, I surely have had my own.  "Brown nosing" ...... these guys (CM team) are volunteering their time and deserve fair and respectful input pro and con.  I think I know you, and think this was just a bad choice of words, especially since your input coming from one with your experience would be valued.

With that in mind, try it out again with giving the arena a clean slate, and ignore the occasional player, who is not aware of what kind of community that the AvA is trying to develop.

Lol maybe that's us.

We are making the AvA our home, but we certainly aren't exclusive, we split up all the time and all we really want to do is provide enough population that people will have a reason to try it.

We started putting the squad together just before the icons were turned off.

We aren't naive, we know everything under the sun has been tried in there, but we like the arena and we'll keep trying to get it going.

As far as no icons, I don't know if it provides any more realism or if it just seems that way to me, I was never a fighter pilot in real life, I don't know what approximates realism better. Maybe as Dhyran put it, it provides a bigger "thrill".

All I can go by is the reaction of people who try it and I may be biased here and unaware of how many people it's driven away, but I, by far, hear more positive comments than negative.

Most people seem to like it,(or so it seems) even those who were initially opposed to the idea and if that is the niche market the arena finds, then that might work, who knows?
