Why DO AP shells explode in the trees?

The detonator on the head of the shell strikes the tree, shell is detonated in tree.

Yes, most if not all have a charge of some sort of explosives. To the best of my knowledge, anyway.

No we don't use HEAT.

Most WW2 era AP rounds did carry HE charges.

iv been labouring that the AP was akin to a 'ball' round as in a rifle ;)

1 Light weight ballistic cap
2 Steel alloy piercing shell
3 Desensitized bursting charge (TNT, Trinitrophenol, RDX...)
4 Fuse (set with delay to explode inside the target)
5 Bourrelet (front) and driving band (rear)

The basic make up of a APBC round used during WW2.

ok wait a sec. :O
this round is suposed to detonate INSIDE the GV!
i take it then that the fuse is not OVERLY sensitive as then it would detonate UPON striking the GV instead of being delayed until penetration had taken place, therefore once again,
how can passage thru a tree foliage trigger the fuse?
