Recent genetic studies have confirmed that at some time in the overlapping of their ranges, Neanderthals and modern humans interbred. Approximately 1-4% of the genetic material sampled from people from Europe, China and Papua-New Guinea originated from mixing with Neanderthals. Although no people of African descent sampled in the study possessed such material, researchers believe this is most likely the result of a limited sample size and that with more wide-spread testing Neanderthal genetic code will be found in other populations of modern humans living today.

Nah...ugly twits throughout history have been trying to find suitable mates outside of their species...watching some of the wildlife walking the streets downtown...I suspect some successfully reproduced with nasty results.

This is the first report that I've seen that supports that conclusion.  All prior genetic studies had been negative or inconclusive.

It should be noted though, that it is very hard to get Neanderthal genetic material.

History Channel started running a similar investigative show 3 months ago.

Previous studies had said there was no evidence, but while the possibility of interbreeding existed the offspring would be sterile (similar to the liger). However if this report is indeed true that would certainly not be the case any longer, as there's no way the genetic material of Neanderthals would be carried through to today in modern humans 30,000 years after the last Neanderthal died if the offspring couldn't reproduce.

I will just point out here that warring nations always have a certain amount of 'rape' going on. Not sure how 'they' conclude that actual offspring resulted that may not simply be abnormalities in gene structures (which is supposed to be the whole basis of Neanderthal as a human-subspecies). I call BS.

If this is true, it could prove that beer/alcohol was discovered during the early days of mankind.

Yes I watched the TWiS coverage today on it... Im not sure their mapping of Neanderthal genomes in the absence of actual Neanderthals is legitimate. Its a guess even if its an educated guess.
