Well, the P3-1GhZ chip has been sitting long enough. I'm going to put another PC together. I went out and bought some peices parts today:

ASUS CUSL2-C mo-bo (no integrated components).
300 Watt <AMD Aproved

> Case
40 Gig IBM 7200 RPM HD

I'll probably throw my GeForce2MX in it for now and see what's out there next month. I'll also throw some generic 128 Meg sticks in it because the computer salesman was really trying to sell me on a Via chipset Mo-Bo citing memory compatability (and limits wich I don't care about).

I should have it going by this weekend

Yeah the 815 is limited to 512 in ram, but that seems like plenty.

Just got a Radeon 64 MB DDR ViVo and a SB-512 to go with it. The 512 wasn't exactly my first choice... but it was there and others weren't.

I like the AMD aproved cases. It means there will be plenty of power for my Intel system.

Well.. got it together. The end results:

Processor: Intel 1GHz (free)
MoBo: ASUS CUSL2-C
Case: 300W Enlight
HD: IBM 40G 7200 RPM
Mem: 2x256M SDRAM (PC-133)
Vid: Radeon 64M DDR ViVo
Sound: Soundblaster 512
NIC: Intel 100TX
CD: Toshiba 16x DVD
OS: Win98 (release 2)

Gotta say I'm quite impressed. I loaded up Rogue Spear and was totally amazed when a cry for help echoed in an enclosed room. I can also play it at maximum size and detail with no noticible hit in framerate.

I also tried the anti-aliasing with 4x sampling and was getting about 20 fps with AH. I didn't really like the blurring effect though so I disabled it. Its getting close.. but not quite there.

It still amazes me how far computers have come.

Deja, if you ever want to see what GOOD FSAA looks like, have a look at a V5. It's "there".

When I read that list I lament that you put 98 on it though. Win2k is just so damn good now, and with that much RAM.... maybe it's not too late for you to go 2k?

I don't really see the advantage to loading Win2k on a personal computer. I do use it on my server/router, but would rather have the driver support and overall compatability of Win98 on a personal PC.

Its actually something I have quite a bit of experience with. I've used NT since the NT 4.0 beta was released. I drove NT 4.0 as a gaming platform to the point of starting a web sight that documented known issues with various games. I provided ICI with a patch to make 1.11r2 NT 4.0 compatable and I was responsible for the joystick driver hotfix. I'd really rather be using NT.

What I do like is that anything I look at on the shelves will work on my 98 box. Anything I buy will have some level of support on my 98 box. That is the only real advantage... but its a biggie.

Dual boot DejaVu. Just have both win98 and win2k on your system - you have plenty of harddrive space to split it in two.

I think you'll find that you always end up booting win2k though.

(I haven't started win98 in 3 months now.)
