Stupid Q about CPU/MB
« on: August 11, 2000, 09:27:00 AM »
I have a BX chipset MB, with a blindingly fast PII 333Mhz sitting on it. Since I'm too cheap to buy a whole new PC, I figure I'll just buy a new CPU.

The Question Is; what is the fastest CPU that will fit my MB, and also what would be the best power/price choice?

Stupid Q about CPU/MB

Juzz, it depends on the motherboard.  Check the documentation and see if either the CPU speed dividers or the BIOS can be set for higher CPU clock rates.

As an example, if you want to be able to put a 500Mhz PIII in the system, check to see if there is either a motherboard jumper or a BIOS setting that allows a 5 divider.

In some cases, an upgrade of the BIOS rom (if the motherboard is jumperless) will allow for higher speed CPU's.

Hope this helps.
