« on: August 06, 2001, 07:53:00 AM »
Just need a step by step Hard drive installation process for hard ware dummies like me.  I've done everything but a complete HD install and fresh install of windows.  URL would be much appreciated.

Check jumpers positions from manual or from top of HD:
-If its connected with some other device to same cable put jumper in Master position and be sure other device is in Slave-mode,
-If its only device in that IDE-line put it on Master-mode or in some disks also without jumpers.

-If you're using UDMA 66/100 be sure your IDE-cable's blue end is conected to mobo.

If your old HD was UDMA 33 and your mobo has UDMA 66 or 100 connectors you might need to put UDMA 66/100 on from mobo's bios (Usually hitting "Del" when starting computer.)

Windows:
Most (Maybe all) new mobos supports "Boot from CD" if you're using 98SE, Me or 2K) thought you might need to put this option On from bios, "Boot sequence". If not use boot-disk and follow instructions on screen).
Put CD in, start computer and follow instructions on screen. First you might want to partition it to smaller parts, I use couple 6-8Gig and couple bigger partitions in my own PC. Next time I'll do this I'll put one small 1Gig partition on HD just for swap-file.
Program for this is fdisk.exe (A:\>fdisk if from floppy) in cd and also if you got old boot-disk for your windows its there too.
After you partitioned your HD boot up your computer again and format all those partitions, format.exe is in win cd or in boot-disk (A:\>format c:, then next partitions d,e etc.).

Restart your pc and start installing windows. If your capable to boot from CD just be sure CD-Drive is mentioned in bios "Boot Sequence", put disk in and put power on. Then just follow instructions.
If you need to boot from floppy put floppy in, start pc and type a:\>setup and follow orders.

Thats it as far as I remember, My system has been very stable several months now so I haven's messed with it for a long time.

btw if you're using Win2K with UDMA66/100 controller like HPT366/370 in Abit's mobos you need to download HPT drivers from Abit's site to floppy before installing W2K, It want's to install them while setup is running.
UDMA66/100 controller is seen in system after windows is installed as a SCSI-controller and it needs its own drivers to work properly. If there's "!" over it in system install drivers and your done.

install hard drive, setting bios to auto detect

boot to win98 startup disk (with cd support)

from a prompt type: fdisk C:

create a partition, making it bootable

format partition

reboot

from a: drive switch over to cd rom drive and copy WIN98 folder over from CD to C: drive. Makes install go much quicker.

slide in your win98 cd and run setup..

re-install everything  :)

your partition can be any size, I just make one huge one now a days..

not that bad really, except for any lost data on old hard drive.

Bloom or somebody had a real good thread on how to install new motherboard and installing win98 on new hd. He suggested installing the video card by itself then adding them one at a time. Here's a link:

good luck with it

Eagler its easier to keep your disks in good shape if they are in smaller partitions, I got one part for WindowsME, One for W2K, one for games and one for storage.
If needed I can format only one partition without losing data in other partitions and scandisk/defrag is easier and more comfortable to run in smaller parts   :)

Buy a Maxtor retail brand open box.

1. Read Directions on inclosed booklet!!
2. Post to news group that a software engineer cant follow simple directions!!  :D
3. before you do all of the above assumeing you are replaceing the one in the other post. Do a good format with an fdsik and all. if this dont work try to do a low level format and redo fat table.

Yep, I used to have a D, E, etc.. but found I couldn't find anything   :)

Does help to have your data that needs to be backed up on a separate drive and the OS on another but now just one scandisk (40 GB)after a computer lockup and I'm good to go   :)

as for brand, I'd go IBM or Western Digital.
get a 7200 speed with a ATA 100 even if ur MB isn't ATA. You'll be ready when ur MB can handle it.

Friggin' reading my mind!  Was just gonna ask which of these two you would buy:

IBM Deskstar75GXP,30GB 8.5ms
               7200rpm UltraATA100,2048KB Buffer

Western Digital-20G, B9.5ms 7200rpm
                EIDE UltraATA/100 2048KB
                   Buffer500KhrsMTBF

Anyway, after reading this thread, I know I'm over my head for time in taking to learn this, so I will be bringing it in to have a professional do it right.

Both good, given the choice - IBM.
You should try it yourself first, then take it to the pro when/if you become lost. With the other computers in the house you can always post ??'s here or search for an answer here: http://groups.google.com/
good luck with it all

Rip, just make DAMN SURE you tell the lab-coat clad geek exactly how big you want those partitions. You could end up with a single mongo partition or a buttload of little 2-gig ones. As for drive brand, splurge and go with the IBM; I hear nothing but praise for 'em. Western Digital is another darn good one to pick up, but with the way code bloat seems to be going, get a big drive. A good friend's system is a 40 gig beast chopped into a few good sized pieces. Like so!....

C: 1 gig (winblows only)
D: 5 gig (games only)
E: 25 gig (storage, mostly MP3's)
F: 2 gig (swap file only)
G: 7 gig (programs n such)

It works for him! Probably gonna scream at Dell to do the same thing here in a month or so for me.

Rip its easier than than it looks like, follow instructions and you never need to carry your PC to some dweeb who does 15minute work and wants 30$ from it.

BTW IBM 60 GXP could be good HD.

Just bought an IBM 40G 7200 RPM.. love it.

One word of caution.  Not all Win98SE cd's are bootable.  I just rediscovered this last weekend.  I really hope the version you have is because it makes thing infinately more simple.

The one thing it never hurts to have is a system disk <Floppy> with fdisk, format, edit, himem and mscdex on it.

If CD isn't bootable:
  • boot from system floppy disk
  • Fdisk the new HD
  • Format it
  • Install your CD drivers (not necessary if you can remember mscdex command strings)
  • Run Setup from Win98 CD
